Chapter 1: A Night in Front of the Screen

Alexandra sat on the couch, her legs curled up beneath her, and her eyes glued to the TV screen as the romantic drama unfolded before her. The room was dark except for the soft glow of the television, casting shadows on the walls. She had always told herself she wasn't one for romance movies, but there was something about this one that had her heart clenching. As the story's emotions deepened, she felt her chest tighten with empathy for the characters. It wasn't just a movie anymore; it was an escape, a reflection of something she didn't want to admit about herself.

So lost in the narrative, she didn't hear the front door open or the rustle of bags until a familiar voice cut through her focus.

"Is my best friend's sister secretly a hopeless romantic?"

Chad's teasing voice broke through her thoughts, pulling her back into the reality of her living room. He stood in the doorway with a smirk on his face, holding an absurd number of snack bags in his arms.

Caught off guard, Alexandra fumbled for the remote, quickly pausing the movie. "I'm not watching this because I like it," she huffed defensively, her cheeks flushing slightly. "It just happens to be on."

Chad's eyebrow quirked upward, his smirk widening. "Right," he said, placing the snacks on the coffee table with exaggerated care. "Just like I 'happen' to have all this junk food because I have no self-control." He settled beside her on the couch, nudging her gently with his shoulder.

Alexandra rolled her eyes, but the truth was, her defenses were already cracking. "You're impossible," she muttered under her breath, attempting to sound annoyed. But her voice had softened.

The movie resumed, and Alexandra tried to ignore Chad's teasing presence beside her. But as the characters onscreen grew closer, she became acutely aware of Chad's glances—how his eyes lingered on her whenever the romantic tension between the characters spiked. Despite herself, her heart began to race, not because of the movie, but because of the growing tension between her and Chad.

It was strange how something so small, like watching a movie together, could feel so charged. She tried to convince herself that it was all in her head.

"Okay, okay," Chad said when the movie reached its most dramatic climax. He nudged her again, his tone softer now. "You really do like this stuff."

"Shut up," Alexandra replied, but there was no bite in her words.

They sat in silence as the movie ended. Chad turned toward her with a grin. "So...when's the next romance movie night?" he asked, his voice playful but his eyes serious, probing.

"Maybe never," Alexandra shot back, feigning nonchalance, but her heartbeat betrayed her, drumming faster as his gaze lingered longer than usual.

Chad leaned in, and for a split second, Alexandra's world tilted. His face was closer than it had ever been before, his breath warm on her skin. Her pulse quickened, her mind raced—was this really happening?

Without warning, Chad's lips brushed against hers in a soft, tentative kiss. The world seemed to pause around them, and Alexandra froze, every nerve in her body alive with the shock of it. But then, before she could think too much, her body responded, her lips pressing back gently.

When they pulled away, the room was filled with silence—heavy, charged, and full of questions.

Chad's teasing demeanor returned, but there was an edge of seriousness in his tone. "Well," he said, his voice low, "that's one way to end a movie night."

Alexandra blinked, her mind still reeling from the kiss. She wanted to joke, to brush it off, but the words wouldn't come. Instead, she simply met Chad's gaze, and they sat in the quiet, both of them aware that things between them had irrevocably changed.
