"Zara! Khaana khaa lia tumne?"
(Did you have your food?)
Her mother asked her as she entered the room finally retiring for the day after doing all the work.
Zara looked away pretending to comb her hair and said.
"Ji ammi."
(Yes mom.)
She lied but her mother knew better. She always did.
"Jooth. Mami ne phir kuch kaha?"
(Lie. Mami again said something?)
She asked in a soft voice. Zara sighed and turned to her with a smile.
"Aap jaanti hai na unhe. Aadat hai unki. Aur mujhe bhook nhi thi isliye nhi khaaya. Nhi toh khaana aur mai toh soulmates hai."
(You know her. Its her habit. And I wasn't hungry. Else food and me are soulmates.)
She joked trying to lighten the atmosphere. Her mother only smiled sadly.
"Mujhe bhook lagegi toh mai khaa lungi ammi. Aap fikra nhi krein."
(I will eat if I feel hungry. Don't worry.)
Naziya nodded and laid on her side. She felt bad that because of her, her daughter had to stay like this. But she had no one else other than her brother.
After her husband's death 8 years ago her world shattered. She and her 10 year old had no one in the world except her brother.
She had a love marriage. Her family supported her and everything happened in a halal way. But some years after her marriage her father who was the only person above her and her brother after their mother's dead at an early age also passed away.
And so when Hammad Sheikh saw his sister standing at the graveyard shattered and holding her daughter to her chest he took her home.
He knew his wife didn't like the two but he also knew that they were safe with him. Only if he knew the truth.
Naziya Ali and her daughter Zara Ali have been treated like slaves by Hammad's wife in his absence. She had even brainwashed her son who used to adore his phupho and his Zara a lot.
Ayaan still adores his phupho but the same cannot be said for Zara. The love he had towards her changed into hatred and disgust.
Zara was in the kitchen cooking dinner while her mother rested in their room. She wasn't keeping well since few days. It seemed to be a normal fever but it wasn't going down and Zara was worried about her.
She was thinking of taking her to doctor when she felt two strong arms cage her against the counter and she gasped.
"Kya bana rhi ho?"
(What are you making?)
She heard his desire filled voice and closed her eyes. She felt shivers down her body. Ayaan scared her. One because of his hate filled eyes for her and second because of his lustful gaze towards her.
"Le-lemon rice aur bhin-bhindi ki sabzi. Aaj please peeche hokar khade ho."
(Please stand back.)
She heard his snicker as he backed off.
"Pretending to be innocent are we. Tsk! Afsos it won't work on me. I know your reality."
He threw a jibe at her making her confused. When she was young and her father was alive Ayaan and she were very close. He was the best friend of hers.
She couldn't understand what changed but since the day she lost her father everything and everyone seemed to have started showing their true colors.
A tear fell her eye thinking about her father. She may be small but she remembered him well.
"I miss you baba!"
She whispered and went back to cooking lest her mami came and started berating her for not getting food.
The next day Zara went out of the house to water the flowers in the frontyard when she saw her neighbour Rayyan Siddique coming out of his house all dressed up in a business suit.
He was carrying a bag and she assumed he was going on another business trip. He took these trips often.
He looked at her and smiled. He waved at her and she waved back with a blush on her cheeks.
He started walking towards her and she heart started beating loudly in her chest as she looked down and tucked her hair behind her ear.
"Assalam-o-alaikum! Kaisi hai aap?"
(How are you?)
He asked and she smiled at him.
"Alaikum assalam! Mai thik hu. Aap kaise hai?"
(I am fine. How are you?)
"Ma sha allah mai bilkul thik hu. Naziya aunty kaisi hai?"
(I am fine. How is Naziya aunty?)
"Wo bhi thik hai."
(She is also fine.)
"Mujhe thodi deri ho rhi hai. Mai chalta hu. Dhyan rakhe apna aur aunty ka. Allah hafiz."
(I am getting late. I'll leave. Take care of yourself and aunty.)
He left and she kept staring at his retrieving back for a long time. Unknown to her two pair of eyes witnessed the entire conversation and his blood boiled seeing her talking to a na-mehram so freely.
Zara took her mother to the local clinic and the doctor said the same thing. She had common fever and would go in some days. Only that it wasn't going to.
The same night Zara slept alongside her mother with a smile as she reminiscined the conversation she had with Rayyan.
He was a nice man and she liked him. She knew he didn't know about her feelings and she wanted to proceed the halal way. This time when he returns she would ask her ammi to send a proposal for him.
But what she didn't know was that this was going to be the last peaceful sleep she was going to get.
Naziya too slept with a smile seeing her daughter's smiling face. She had an inkling about her feelings for the neighbour boy.
She felt her eyes droop down and she saw her husband's smiling face in her dream.
Tears pooled her eyes as she embraced him after so long. The two were finally together again. Earlier as humans and this time as souls.
Naziya breathed her last the same night and left the world peacefully in her sleep. Her hand clutching her daughter's and her soul reuniting with her husband's.
She knew her brother would take care of her Zara. What she didn't know was that her life was going to be completely changed. The coming months were going to be the darkest of Zara's life.
