It was but a dream,

A transient joy that simply shuns ever after.

It was a sad month in October,

I realized too late what I had one,

I couldn't retract on the devil's trade I made,

Reason and sanity I gave away,

For the romanticized promise of young love,

A gamble I had made on my heart,

With a bad hand of cards.

I tried to cheat Fate,

Thinking that perhaps this once,

A fast one can be pulled on Destiny.

A dangerous delusion,

One that I pay for dearly in the next month,

When the dice rolled on,

And all that are left are empty IOU notes,

With all my stakes in another's hand.

In the here and now,

All that remains is bittersweet memory,

A painfully beautiful image I pull up now and again,

During the few lonely nights I feel masochistic enough to try,

And when I'm not, there's always the regret to keep me company...
