Miguel never truly understood missing someone until Maya was no longer by his side. He was with her in the hospital every day, but since the doctors put her in a medically induced coma, she didn't know he was there. Or he didn't think she knew. There were no more snarky remarks or sarcastic responses. She didn't make any jokes and she didn't emit any laughs. The usual room that Maya lit up was dim and dull. Maya was hooked up to a bunch of different wires and oxygen things that helped her breathe better until she woke up, and if you looked past those you could just tell that Maya was sickly.
If people didn't know that Maya's favorite color was purple before, they definitely knew it now. People sent purple flowers, purple cards, purple balloons, and purple teddy bears. Most of her flowers were set on the little bedside table next to her hospital bed, but next to those was her All Valley Girls Winner trophy. They gave Johnny the All-Valley winner trophy after they took Maya away on a stretcher, Maya didn't know Eagle Fang won the All-Valley.
Many people came to see Maya, Miguel wasn't used to seeing Hawk cry. It was only the second time he'd seen him cry in his entire life, the first time was after Maya broke up with him. Miguel was even more surprised when he saw Johnny cry, now that was something Miguel thought he'd never see. Johnny's tough exterior only seemed to fall for Maya, and Miguel at times.
Miguel wasn't too surprised when Johnny cried over Maya. It was understandable. Maya was like the daughter Johnny never had, and seeing her waste away in a hospital tore him apart. Sometimes he couldn't even go and see her, he had to sit outside her room. Maya was such a lively person, seeing her like that was practically seeing her dead already.
Everyone always said maybe, could, and hope. Maybe she'll live. She could live. We have to hope she lives. Miguel knew you could have all the hope in the world, but that doesn't mean it's the truth. Maya could still die, hope was practically just lying to yourself to make yourself feel better. That didn't mean that Miguel didn't have hope. He had loads of it. He hoped Maya would live. He couldn't lose his best friend, his sister.

Late at night, one of the only nights that Miguel was staying at home and not the hospital, his phone started to ring. Hawk was keeping him company, they played tons of video games and ate tons of snacks. At that moment they'd been trying to fall asleep.
"Hello?" Miguel asked groggily, Hawk sat up as well. He finally had enough hair for a tiny mohawk, he ended up dying it green because it was Maya's second favorite color.
"Miggy, she's awake." Miguel sat up quickly, his head spinning slightly. Had he heard his mom wrong?
"What?"
"Miguel, what's wrong?" Hawk whispered, but Miguel didn't hear him.
"Maya, she's awake, me and Johnny are gonna stay here but Ya-Ya's going home and she's gonna tell you everything," Miguel said okay, before saying I love you and goodbye to his mom and turning to Hawk. Miguel looked stunned, Hawk immediately thought of Maya. Had she died? What had happened?
"Maya's awake." Miguel's voice was flat as if he didn't believe it himself. "My Ya-Ya's gonna come home and tell me some stuff, I guess it's about Maya." Hawk rubbed his eyes, there was no way he could go to sleep now.
"Can we go see her?" Miguel sighed, his mom hadn't said anything about that, but he guessed that they would be able to see her tomorrow.
"No, we can go see her tomorrow." Miguel heard the front door open, and the two of them quickly scrambled up to meet Ya-Ya at the door.
