The night was dark and still, the kind of stillness that only comes with utter emptiness. The sound of Seonghwa's hesitant footsteps seemed to echo in the silence, only adding to his nervousness. He only had one thing on his mind.
And that was to save his husband.
Three weeks earlier was a dark and traumatic time. Seonghwa and his significant other, happily married, were attacked by a group of strangers who broke into their home. They were pretty well off, both with good paying jobs that allowed them to easily afford a nice big house, one they were going to fill with kids. They already had the talk and was ready to take the next step but it all quickly came to a deviating halt.
The six men broke into their home with every intention of robbing them. Seonghwa's husband, being the protector that he was, tried to stop them. He did everything he could.
Just thinking about everything that happened that night filled Seonghwa's eyes with helpless tears as he quickened his pace. He remembered it all so clearly. He remembered how brutally beaten - almost to death - his husband was while he was pathetically tied up, unable to do anything to save him. Seonghwa was forced to watch the entire time as the life was slowly fading from his lover's eyes, listened to those terrible men make disgusting comments towards him as he lied helplessly on the floor, covered in blood and tears.
He feared for himself and his husband and was filled with a sense of relief when, eventually, they had finally left, taking as many valuables they could get their hands on as they disappeared into the night.
It took Seonghwa hours to release himself enough to call the police.
They were immediately rushed to the hospital where his husband had to undergo surgery.
After a few more hours - which really felt like an insufferable eternity - a doctor was finally able to inform Seonghwa of his husband's condition.
But it was nowhere near good.
Not that Seonghwa was expecting it to be.
His husband had taken too many merciless blows to the head, resulting in brain damage. Adding that to the massive amount of blood loss, Seonghwa's husband had fallen into a comatose state. The doctors weren't sure if he'd ever wake up and told Seonghwa that he should expect the worse. That, even if his husband did wake up, there was still a big possibility that they wouldn't know the state of his brain.
The whole thing terrified Seonghwa to no end, his heart felt weak and his eyes were red with tears. The thought that he may never get his husband back, awake or asleep, was enough to crush him emotionally.
He had no other choice. His eyes darted from side to side, as if searching for something that was not there. Silently, he walked down the empty road, a small box in his hands that contained all of his important information; his ID, birth certificate, things like that. He heard it all from a friend a long time ago, learned of a possible way to bring his husband back. Said friend believed in all types of things, things like demons, how they're real, how to get in contact with one, and how to get them to do favors for you.
Most importantly, how to make a deal with them.
Back then, he brushed those things off.
Seonghwa didn't believe in any of it and was always skeptical whenever his friend preached so passionately about it. But now was different. Now, he would do anything to save his husband, even sell his soul. As he walked, Seonghwa muttered quiet words of reassurance under his breath, his voice low and urgent. The words were familiar, a reminder of the love his husband had for him even during his darkest times.
His steps quickened as he finally approached his destination, the place where the veil was said to be thinnest. He paused, taking a deep breath and clutching the box tighter. In front of him, the road he had been walking on laid into another, forming a big X.
