It’s over.
I stop running and concentrate on my wolf; waiting for that teeth grinding, bone cracking feeling of the shift but it never comes. From behind me the large black wolf is catching up. His snarls became louder, his heart beat clearer. Everything went quiet. All noises ceased, the heavy panting stopped, the crunch of rotting twigs under bulky paws stopped. The only sound was the wind howling bitterly through the trees. My own harsh breathing seemed to stop. The crackle of debris from behind me and the noises picked up again.
They say when a mate is rejected they go into a sort of rage, destroying all in its path; much like the mid shift stage, they are in constant, chilling pain but they just cannot seem to relieve the pain. Once they shift, their wolf takes over and the feeling of rejection really sets in, leaving then howling and hiding from humanity by disappearing deep into the forest. In the end they return more alone and distant than you can imagine. They are a ticking time bomb ready to explode at the smallest of things. It seems my mate missed these steps. An alpha cannot run out on his pack. It seems my mate could not be happy with just one mate. The pressure of being placed into a situation where I have to carry his pups, prepare for the pack day and night, to be the packs Luna scared me. I just wanted to be unnoticed here but the moment I set foot on the Shadow Pack’s land I felt the sudden urge to find my mate and finish the mating process. Following his scent with my inner wolf’s tongue hanging out of her mouth and tail wagging behind her, only to open a door to what I assumed was a bedroom to find a shifter couple at be. It can’t be… I sniff the air and my mates scent hit me. Both my wolf and I were that in shock that our body didn’t go into heat. Every female shifter goes into heat when they meet their mate for the first time. Their body goes into a frenzy that only unmated male shifters can smell. Some say it smells like cinnamon, others like vanilla beans and sea mist. All the mate-less male shifters try to mate with the female in heat. I didn’t go into heat. My wolf howled in the far corner of my soul with her tail between her legs and her ears stuck straight down. The woman in my mate’s bed looked at me with disgust then back at him and began kissing him again. I bent into a defensive stance and growled deep in my chest and fought for control over my wolf but controlling her was too much when he stood to protect her. He was protecting that skank and not me! His true mate. I let my wolf have her freedom and let her take over. My mate got into a defensive stance and shielded the girl from me. Some mate he was! Next thing I knew I was in control of my wolf form for the first time slowly falling to the ground with knees of jelly with my muzzle between my paws looking up at my mate through my wolfy lashes. ‘See, Destiny. This is why I didn’t want to find a pack! We were happy as rogues! No cheating mate, no growling, no heart break!’ My wolf, Destiny didn’t reply. I could not feel her presence. After I shifted back to my human form my so-called ‘mate’ led me to an office. As I stormed into the office it clicked HE IS THE ALPHA! My eyes bulged out of my head and my face turned a shade of red not yet discovered as I stood fully naked before my mate. “Well, aren’t you just yummy!” his hungry eyes loomed over my body as he studied every part of me. I wanted to yell at him, I wanted to slap him, I wanted to do something but I was glued to the ground, unable to move. I just stood there whilst he oogled me and drooled over his polished desk. I spent the week without hearing from Destiny, not a peep out of her. She wasn’t there anymore, for the first time, I was truly alone. My mate- who I found out was names Jesse, was shocked, He never expected to find his true mate so he picked a strong wolf to be the pack Luna. He decided that he wanted to keep me around for ‘strong pups’ and to ‘have a little fun’ The night I ran away Jesse had snuck into my room. He climbed into the bed and before I had time to react he reefed my face to his and kissed me hard. No passion or love in it at all. Just lust. I closed my eyes and shut my mind off. A single tear rolled down my hot cheek. This was supposed to be the happiest moment of my life jet here I was crying. His hand moved from his sides to my hips and slowly made their way up to my breast and he snickered. My eyes flung open and I shot out of bed. He looked up at me with dazed eyes and slowly stood up in front of me. I swung my arm back and slapped him across the face leaving a nice handprint in its place. “Ooh I like ‘em feisty.” Jesse winked at me and began flexing his muscles at me. I opened my mouth and tried to speak but no sound came out. I closed my mouth, counted to five and tried again “I, Eve; of the former Yellow Stone Pack reject you, Jesse; Alpha of the Shadow Pack.” Jesse’s eyes changed from his light grey human eyes to his moss green wolf eyes, he began to shake. I ran for the door as a slow, deep growl developed in Jesse’s chest. The door opened with a great heave. Getting down the stairs to the back door was a pain, so many corners in this mansion! When I got to the back door I heard the ripping of clothes and the snapping of bones. My heart stopped.
It’s over.
From behind me a wolfy cackle picked up as Jesse’s wolf emerged from the grim shadows. With each slow, painful step he took my heart slowed down more and more to a stop. I closed my eyes awaiting my final breath. Strong paws gripped onto my ankle and knocked me onto my back slowly dragging me further and deeper into the stale, darkness of the forest…
