Chapter 3: Bad Moon Rising

Ava's sitting on the couch in her living room with Elena next to her and Damon welcomes Alaric into the room, and he says, "Thanks for coming, Ric. Can I get you something to drink? Coffee? Bourbon? Bourbon in your coffee?" Alaric says, "Elena mentioned you needed my help." Alaric sits down in front of the couple and Ava says, "Yeah, we were, uh, hoping you could help shed some light on the Lockwood family." Alaric says, "Now, why would I know anything about the Lockwoods?" Damon says, "Well, you wouldn't. But your dead... not-dead vampire wife might." Elena says, "Isobel's research, from when you guys were at Duke together." Ava says, "You said that she had spend years researching this town." Alaric says, "Isobel's research here Mystic Falls were rooted in folklore and legend. At the time, I thought most of which was... fiction." Damon says, "Like that amazing vampire story." Elena says, "Aside from vampires, what else?" Alaric says, "Lycanthrope." Ava smiles smugly at Damon and Damon rolls his eyes. Elena says, "Wait. Like werewolves?" Damon says, "No way. Impossible. Way too Lon Chaney." Ava says, "Is it?" Damon says, "I've been on this planet a hundred and sixty some odd years, I've never come across one. If werewolves exist, where the hell are they?" Alaric says, "Why do you suspect the Lockwoods?" Damon says, "Because vervain didn't affect the mayor on Founder's Day, but the Gilbert device did. And it affected his son Tyler." Ava says, "And at the school carnival his uncle Mason exhibited inhuman behavior when he fought one of the carnival workers. So, it suggested some sort of a... supernatural entity." Elena says, "We were hoping that Isobel's research could help us figure out what it is." Alaric says, "A lot of her things are still at Duke. I mean, her office is still there. She's technically still missing." Damon says, "So, can we get access to it? Ric, we need to know what we're dealing with. If this wolf man thing is true, I've seen enough movies to know it's not good. It means Mason Lockwood is a real-life Lon Chaney and that little Tyler punk may just very well be Lon Chaney junior. Which means Bella Lugosi, meaning me, is totally screwed." Later, Ava's in Elena's room and she says, "You sure you want to do this?" Elena says, "Which part? Digging through my birth mother's lifework or going to Duke with Damon?" Ava says, "Either. Both." Elena says, "Well, I'm sure about the first part. But then again, Ric is a good buffer. So, we can bond in our anti-Damon solidarity. I wish you were coming though." Ava says, "I know, but I promised I'd help Caroline." Jenna then yells, "Elena, you coming?" Ava says, "That's your cue." Elena sighs and they both walk downstairs. Ava walks outside and Damon looks at Ava and says, "Sorry you can't come too, Aves." Elena puts her bag into the car and she glares at Damon, while Ava says, "Call me if you need anything." Damon says, "Oh, I'll take really good care of her." Elena then grabs Ava's face and pulls her into a kiss, and she pulls away and she smiles smug at Damon. Damon says, "Okay. Time to go." Damon gets into the car and Ava opens the back door for Elena and she smiles at Ava, and she gets into the car. Ava watches the car drive away. Later, Ava's at the Grill with Bonnie because Ava wants Bonnie to make a day ring for Caroline. Bonnie says, "I don't know how to make a day-walking ring." Ava says, "Emily made mine. She made Damon's, too. Instructions must be on the Grimoire." Bonnie says, "That doesn't mean I can cast the spell." Ava says, "Bonnie. You know how to drop vampires with a single look, okay? I think you can figure it out." Bonnie says, "Caroline killed someone, Ava. I can't make it easier for her to do it again." Ava says, "No. We're not making it easier for her. We're just giving her the chance to survive. Listen, every day that she's cut off from her old life from you, from Elena, from Matt... it'll make it that much harder for her to hold on to her humanity." Bonnie says, "And how do you know she won't hurt anyone else?" Ava says, "I don't. But if we don't do everything, we can to help her or at least trust the fact that she can keep it together we might as well just stake her right now." Bonnie says, "I don't know if I can trust her. Not with this." Ava says, "Do you trust me?" Bonnie takes a minute to answer, and she sighs and nods her head. Later, Ava's at Caroline's with Bonnie in Caroline's bedroom. Caroline complains, "So, I don't get to choose the ring I have to wear for the rest of my life?" Bonnie says, "Hey, if you don't want it..." Ava says, "No. She wants it." Caroline says, "Now what?" Bonnie says, "Now's the part where I explain the rules. The witch who spells the ring has the power to de-spell it. So, if you ever do anything to hurt anyone--" Caroline cuts Bonnie off and says, "I'm not going to hurt anyone." Bonnie says, "You're a vampire. That means the urge to kill is a part of who you are. The minute you let it take over, I will stop you." Caroline says, "Bonnie, you're supposed to be my friend." Bonnie says, "I can't ignore what happened. Okay, if you wanna be friends, you're going to have to prove that the Caroline I remember isn't gone. Now, put the ring on the bed." Caroline does as she's told, and she says, "Do you really think I meant to kill that guy at the carnival?" Bonnie says, "He's still dead. Now, do you want me to cast the spell or not?" Bonnie opens the curtain a little and Bonnie looks at the ring and chants a spell that not even Ava can hear. Bonnie grabs the ring, and she says, "All done." Caroline has her hand out and Bonnie places the ring in her hand. As Caroline puts the ring on, she says, "Um... So, that's it? I mean, nothing witchy happened. You know, no flickering lights no gust of wind. Have you even done this before?" Ava says, "Caroline!" Caroline looks at Ava and says, "Well, I just want to make sure it worked!" Bonnie opens the curtain all the way and Caroline shields herself. Bonnie says, "It worked." Caroline scoffs and angrily says, "What if it hadn't, Bonnie?" Bonnie looks at Ava and says, "She's all yours." Bonnie walks away and Caroline sighs actually liking the ring. Later, Ava and Caroline are in the woods. Caroline says, "So, what do I do when I see the rabbit?" Ava says, "Chase it, catch it, feed on it." Caroline says, "Isn't killing cute, defenseless animals the first step in becoming a serial killer?" Ava says, "Well, you sort of skipped serial killer and went straight to vampire. Hey, Caroline, if you're not serious about all this I think you should tell me." Caroline says, "No. I am. Look, I swear I am! Okay? But it's just... I haven't been in the sun for days. And everyone's at the swimming hole having fun and Matt is there, and he finally told me that he loved me. But I've been blowing him off, and now you want me to eat bunnies and I'm kind of freaking out, okay?" Caroline blows a puff of air out and Ava laughs. Caroline says, "And now you're laughing at me." Ava smiles and says, "No. I'm not laughing. None of this is funny, trust me. It's just that, uh..." Caroline says, "What?" Ava says, "When somebody becomes a vampire all their natural behaviors get sort of, uh, amplified." Caroline's confused and says, "What do you mean?" Ava says, "I mean, as a human I cared deeply for people and how they felt. If they were hurting, I felt their pain. And I felt guilty if I was the one that caused it. And as a vampire all of that got... magnified." Caroline says, "So, you're saying that now I'm basically an insecure neurotic, control freak on crack." Ava says, "Well, I wasn't gonna say it like that. But... Hey, listen. Let's hunt. Okay? And then after that we'll go to the swimming hole." Caroline says, "Really?" Ava says, "Yeah. Matt is the closet connection that you have to your humanity and I think that being around him is a good thing." Caroline smiles and says, "Okay!" Ava says, "Come on." Ava and Caroline go hunt. Later, Ava and Caroline arrive at the swimming hole and Ava watches Mason leave with a curious look and Mason winks at her. Ava rolls her eyes and Caroline says, "Why are you looking at him with your serious vampire look?" Ava looks at Caroline confused and says, "My what? My "serious vampire" look?" Caroline nods and says, "I mean, it's different from your "worried vampire" look. Neither of which stray too far from your "Hey, it's Tuesday" look." Ava smiles and says, "Oh, I get it, okay. You think I'm, uh... You think I'm too serious. Is that it?" Caroline says, "I mean, I wasn't going to say it like that, but..." Ava chuckles. Moments later, Ava walks over to Caroline and says, "Hey, I saw that. You compelled her." Caroline says, "Yeah, well, she deserved it." Ava says, "Caroline, nobody deserves to have their mind messed with for shallow reasons." Caroline says, "You know, why is everyone sticking up for Aimee freaking Bradley?" Ava says, "You're letting your jealousy get the best of you." Caroline says, "Oh, so now I have magnified jealousy issues too. That's great." Ava says, "I told you this wasn't going to be easy." Caroline says, "Yeah, well. Might as well have stayed dead. My entire personality is killing me." Ava chuckles and Caroline says, "Shut up." Later, it's dark out and Ava and Caroline look at Matt. Caroline says, "He's mad at me." Ava looks at Caroline and says, "Go talk to him. I'll wait." Ava's phone then rings, and she walks away and answers it. Ava says, "Hey." Elena says, "Hi. Listen. We've learned some stuff here. And I know it's gonna sound crazy, but I wanted to fill you in." Ava says, "What's up?" Elena explains everything to Ava, and she says, "I don't know what it means, or if we should even believe it but i-it's a full moon, Ava. After what you saw Mason Lockwood do..." Ava says, "I'll be careful." Elena sighs and says, "There's one more thing." Ava says, "What is it?" Elena says, "According to the legend... a werewolf bite can kill a vampire." Ava looks over to see Caroline and Matt gone and she gets worried. Ava says, "Listen, I have to go. I'll see you when you get home, okay?" Elena says, "Okay." Ava hangs up and she calls Caroline, and she hears Caroline's phone and finds that she left it. Ava says, "Damn it." Ava goes to find Caroline and she hears growling, and she finds Mason's car. Ava looks down to find claw marks on the ground. As Ava looks around the truck, she steps on something, and she looks down to see chains and she hears a noise, and she looks inside the car, and she backs away when she sees glowing eyes. The wolf jumps through the window and tackles Ava to the ground. Ava stands up with shock knowing that the wolf was Mason. Later, Ava speeds over to Caroline who's drinking Matt's blood and she pushes Caroline away from Matt and she says, "Stop it! Hey, stop! Stop! Stop." Caroline's face goes back to normal, and she pants, "Oh, my God." As Caroline goes to Matt, Ava stops her and says, "No, no, no. No, stop. Listen to me. We need to get out of these woods now. We need to leave." Caroline says, "Why?" Ava hears growling. Ava looks down at Matt and she says, "Matt, stay down. Do not move." Ava hears the growling getting closer and she looks all around her. Ava says, "You and me, we're gonna run. Okay? It's gonna follow us. We need to get it away from Matt. So, you need to run as fast as you can. Do you understand me? Go. Go!" Caroline speeds away with Ava right behind her. Caroline stops and says, "Wait! What is it?" Ava says, "It's a werewolf! It will try to kill us, and it can." A voice says, "Hey! What are you two doing?" They look over to see Tyler and Ava says, "What are you doing?" Then the wolf tackles Caroline to the ground and she screams. Tyler yells, "No!" Ava tackles the wolf to the ground and Tyler yells, "No!" The werewolf speedily runs away. Later, Ava and Caroline go back to Matt and Caroline compels Matt saying, "You're not gonna remember what I did to you. Or what you saw me become. We were just making out in the woods. And then an animal attacked you... and bit your neck." Matt says, "It was weird. It just came out of nowhere." Caroline then walks away from Matt, and she exhales. Caroline says, "What are we gonna do about Tyler?" Ava says, "I took care of it. I'll get Matt on vervain. It'll keep you from being able to compel him... but also keep you from being able to drink his blood." Caroline nods and says, "I can't believe I hurt him." Ava softly says, "I know." Caroline says, "And he's the one person on this entire planet that I never wanted to hurt." Ava says, "Well, it's not gonna get any easier. You're just gonna have to... work that much harder." Caroline says, "I shouldn't be with him, should I? And if there's any danger--" Ava cuts her off and says, "I'm the last person to make that kind of decision for you. Even if I followed my own advice, I would have walked away from Elena a long time ago." Caroline says, "You ever think you should have?" Ava chuckles and says, "I know I should of. I just can't." Caroline nods.
