"So, I got a call saying that your mom's funeral's gonna be in a couple of months. I didn't get a date, but they should call back soon and tell us." Rachel nodded as her dad spoke, there was no school today and Elaine was at the neighbor's house playing with her little friend. She felt her dad press a kiss on the top of her head, he hadn't done something like that in a long time. Rachel felt embarrassed that she, a sixteen-year-old girl, wanted her dad to hug her until she couldn't breathe and kiss the top of her head. "So, what're you gonna do today?" Rachel shrugged, her dad sitting across from her at the table."Nothing really, thought I might go see a friend." She was talking about Sam, but her dad had never shown this much interest in what she was doing before. Maybe he wanted to spend some time with her. She'd give up anything for that, except for Elaine.
"Why don't you come down to the dojo? You could help me with a lesson." Rachel felt her smile fall a bit, so he didn't want to spend time with her, he just needed her for something.
"What's the lesson?" Johnny chuckled as he shrugged.
"I don't know, I usually make it up on the spot." Rachel didn't think that was the best way to teach but all she could think about was the fact that her dad was asking her to come along. Even if he wouldn't be spending much time with her, he still wanted her to be there, and that meant something to her. It was dumb because it was the bare minimum, but still.
"Sure."

Rolling chairs, one of Rachel's favorite things, and luckily her dad had one in his office. She spun and spun, never feeling dizzy, and it could bend a bit backward too! Her dad was doing warmups, Hawk looked pretty badass with his new mow-hawk, she was just waiting for him to come up with a lesson. When her dad finally returned, sitting behind his desk, Rachel perked up.
"Aisha's unflinching this group, you wouldn't be interested." Rachel sighed, already looking for something to do in his office. Rachel had noticed that she got easily agitated when she didn't have something for her to do. She'd been on her meds for about a week, and she'd gotten slightly better but Ms. Sandra said it had gone full force yet, which made Rachel excited about how much better she could get.
When Miguel walked in, seeing Rach's legs draped on Johnny's desk. Seeing her jean shorts and white tank top with a little thin white cover jacket, he blushed, then looking at Johnny.
"Hey, Sensei, I need to ask you something." Rachel watched as Miguel fiddled with his fingers nervously.
"First aid's under the counter. We got a bleeder?" Johnny asked.
"No. Well, yeah, we do. There's a lot of blood, but this is about something else." Rachel set down her phone, fully listening now.
"What is it?"
"Well, there's a girl at school..." Miguel started, trying so hard to glance at Rach. Part of him was talking about Rach and the other was talking about Sam. He wished he had the confidence to ask out Rach, maybe he would but with the way she was acting, he was sure she wasn't interested in him at all.
"Is she hot?"
"...and she's super smart," Miguel added.
"Hot?"
"Funny and cool," Miguel added.
"Hot?"
"Yes, she's hot. Super-hot." Miguel chuckled, Johnny and Rach, looking at each other.
"Nice."
"I think you'd really like her. She likes karate, and...I wanna ask her out, but I just don't know." Rachel looked at her dad, she wanted to hear his dating advice, although she was sure it would be terrible.
"Don't know? What's there to think about? She's hot, and all those other things." Rachel looked back at Miguel.
"Well, yeah, but what if she says no." Rachel felt herself smile, Miguel was adorable. Stop, stop, stop, she told herself, you're supposed to hate him.
"Never accept defeat, Diaz. There is no 'no'." Johnny saw Rachel look at him, worry creased on her face.
"Pretty sure no means no." Rachel nodded with Miguel.
"If things are getting physical, no means no, but if you're just asking her out...you're a Cobra Kai. All the babes wanna date a Cobra Kai." Johnny turned to Rachel. "Right?" He asked, Rachel shrugged.
"The hottest one you have is Hawk." Miguel frowned, Johnny, laughing slightly. "Don't worry Diaz, your second only to him." Miguel felt heat rise to his cheeks, although Rachel sounded like she was jokingly flirting with him as she did with Hawk.
"See!" Johnny smiled.
"Okay, well, can I go un-flinch some of your students?" Johnny nodded for her to go, Rachel got to hit someone in the face without getting in trouble. It was as if her dream came true.

Stupid, stupid, stupid, Miguel. She hated Miguel. She loathed Miguel. He asked out Sam. Rachel's Sam! She couldn't tell who she was more pissed at. Sam for taking Miguel, or Miguel for taking Sam. Rachel couldn't tell her dad either, because he'd want to know about Sam's family, and he'd be pissed to find out she was a LaRusso.
She sat in the corner of the dojo, drawing. She drew people. She remembered making paper dolls for Elaine once, she still had them and played with them all the time. Rachel felt embarrassed to admit that she drew people that she saw, people she thought were attractive or simply just beautiful.
She drew Miguel and Hawk a lot, and it was really embarrassing to admit that she'd drawn Sam too. At first, she thought she was mindlessly drawing, but when Aisha tapped her shoulder, she realized she was drawing Miguel.
"Hey, that's pretty good, is it-"
"It's nobody." Rachel interrupted, slamming the sketchbook close and looking up at her. "What's up?" Suddenly Aisha was pulling Rachel up and dragging her over to where she, Miguel, and Hawk were sitting. "Wha-"
"Miguel needs help with dating advice, and you know Sam better than all of us." Rachel quickly pulled her arm from Aisha's grasp, glaring at her.
"There's a reason," Hawk muttered.
"I'm not helping him," Rachel muttered, Miguel, wondered why she was talking as if he wasn't sitting right in front of her.
"Why not?" Aisha whined.
"Because!" Rachel tried to come up with a different reason that wouldn't make her admit that she liked Miguel or Sam. "Because I hate Miguel." Miguel and Hawk stood quickly as Rachel folded her arms. Miguel felt as if his heart was in his throat, just yesterday Rachel had been jokingly flirting with him, but now she hated him?! Rachel was so confusing, Miguel wanted to know what she was thinking that she wasn't saying.
"What, why?!" Miguel asked quickly but Rachel just stared at the ground and shrugged. Miguel saw Hawk look at Rachel and then at Miguel, he knew something and he wasn't saying it. "What? What do you know, Hawk?" Rachel's head snapped up quickly.
"He knows nothing." She spat bitterly, before pushing through the group and leaving.
That night, Rachel watched VHS tapes that her mom had created of her and her dad. Some were birthdays some were Christmas's and some were practicing karate. She wanted to go back. Go back to the karate practicing, go back to the baseball games, the days when Rachel had always thought her dad would love her. Now, he was always worried about Robby or Miguel. She understood why he loved both of them, but Rachel wanted his love too.
