The only time I know of people crying for me, is when I was born, and only because my mum told me ;-) Now, Im the only one crying. After arguments, the end of a tv show, when I get hurt or when theres no food left in the fridge, it never ends. But I eventually found my happiness. I joined diving around six years ago working my way up the levels. Ive won medals, ribbons and even money, its what keeps me sane. All my friends are on the same team as me and we go to practice together, thats where we all met.
Alette! Get your ass down here, we have got to go! my mother yells at me from downstairs. I hurl myself off my bed, grabbing my bag and putting on some thongs in the process as I race out of my room, running down the stairs to catch up with my mother. I stop by the fridge to grab my water bottle, you never know when you need it, shove it into my bag and run out the door locking it behind me. I run over to the car, pull the red door handle and chuck my bag in. I jump in pull the door shut and were off. I chose a blue one-piece swimsuit with small white stitching lines on the side to wear at practice today. I put on some simple bike shorts over the top.
How is diving going Hun my mother asks, focusing on the road more than the question as she tries to keep the car on the road.
Its going fine. Scarlet was sick last time so I didnt have a partner because Mary and Liana paired together. I got put with some new girl named Tanya. She was alright I guess. I reply, talking about my experience at my last practice class. I look out the window attempting to focus my attention on a single object before it zooms past.
Well lets hope Scarlet gets better before coming back to practice, I dont want you ending up sick and then missing out on another class. Last time you missed a class - she says before I cut her off.
a lady from a big sports academy came through to look at all the girls, and I wasnt there to be judged I say, finishing her sentence. Mum looks at me through the mirror, frowning.
Sorry I mumble. I hold onto the handle as we take a few more turns, preventing the g-forces from throwing me from one side of the car to the other. I dont get car sick, Im lucky. Well, at least everyone says I am. I remember one time I was traveling with Lianas mum in her van with some other girls and our friends and we had to stop three times because one of the girls kept almost puking. On the way back she apparently did but I wasnt in the car that time thank goodness. My phone buzzes, lighting up in my lap. I peak at it to read the new text message Ive received.
Hey, are you coming today? Practice starts soon hurry up! It was from Scarlet.
Yeah, Im omw now I reply, gripping the handle yet again as we take a sharp turn this time almost taking me to the other side of the car. If it wasnt for the seatbelt and handle, I would have been bruised from all the turning.
This girl...Alette hello! Gosh you keep getting lost in thought! Were here now, do you have all your stuff? my mother says opening her car door. I duck in between the seats to grab my bag and jump out of the car after my mother opens the door for me. Just my luck, I step right into a muddy puddle covering my thongs in mud. I sigh in frustrated disbelief. Now Ill have to walk inside in bare feet. We had pulled up in front of a large building made with bricks and a tile roof with no windows at the front but inside was amazing. We walk to the front door, push it open and walk straight through. As we walk Mum turns off to head upstairs to watch the diving with the other mothers in the airconditioned viewing room while they gossip about everyone and everything. I wave to the receptionist as I pass her desk and head to the change rooms. The floor, which has a marble pattern on it, is kind of cold on my bare feet as I plod along. I enter the pool area where there is an Olympic pool for squad training plus a second square deep pool, with diving boards everywhere and head across to the toilets and change rooms. I enter a cubicle and put down my bag shutting the door behind me. When I emerge, I slip on my matching blue swimming cap and my goggles that are a lighter blue with a dark tint to them. Its kind of good that I cut my hair short a few days ago, so its easier to put the swimming cap on. I grab my water bottle as well as change the sign on the cubicle door to taken as I leave. I walk over to the diving pool and a bunch of girls gathered around some seats. I make my way over greeting everyone I meet with a smile. My friends make to run over to me but get stopped by the loud whistle our coach is blowing. Im now getting excited because practice has begun. My heart starts to pound faster as I take cautious steps up the tall ladder being careful not to slip. A few more steps and before I know it, Im raising my leg to step onto the very top high dive board. I pull my goggles off my head and place them quickly and expertly over my eyes.
A double front Alette my coach calls out to me from the ground, holding a thumbs up after. I look down at the pool concentrating before I walk towards the edge of the dive board. I start with little steps expanding them to larger steps before jumping high up in the air and taking a deep breath. The air pushing past me as I move my body into a tuck shape and roll over twice in the air. Suddenly I freeze, I cant move! I open my eyes to see the water rushing towards me and Im going in headfirst. The screams fade out as I hit the water, becoming completely emersed. My body opens as I sink to the bottom of the pool. My vision is splashed with black dots, not a sense of feeling left in me. I shut my eyes, hoping it will all be over soon. A hand grabs mine pulling me up above water. I try to gasp for air, but nothing enters my lungs. Eventually, I fade out with the sound of people talking frantically around me. My heart beats loudly in my head. Not long after I feel myself slipping in and out of consciousness with the pounding in my head getting louder and louder with the sounds of sirens in the background. I feel a small headache coming on from all the pounding then something cold is put on my head. But then everything comes to a complete stop. The pounding, the headache, the pain and horrible breathing, just all disappears. Its all gone, as if nothing happened.
