What is this... Darkness? Where... Am I?
This was the first thought to enter their head, as if their consciousness had just been born into the inky black sea of nothingness. They didn't understand it, they didn't know anything of it, and certainly didn't remember how the infinite darkness came to be. Floating within the empty space of the subconscious was a singular word.Avalign.
Is this... My name? Where did it come from? Where did I... Come from?
A ceaseless flow of questioning, but no answers to be found in the silent void. Until it wasn't. Without any sudden warning cracks of light appeared to the left and right of their field of view, growing larger and wider as the lid to some sort of container seemed to open itself. Liquid began to flow out the more it opened, the lid fell to the ground with a loud thud; its occupant not far behind it. Avalign could finally hear and feel again, the cold air hit their bare chest and their lungs as they gasped. No longer suspended in the chamber, they fell to the floor with a resounding wet smack. They took their first breath, the air in their lungs felt amazing.
So this is what it feels like?
Quiet groans escaped Avalign's mouth, the strenuous task of pushing themselves off the floor was tough on their numb arms. All 5 senses were returning quickly, but they still felt lost and confused. A gentle cough allowed some of the containers liquid to exit their lungs, some still dripping from their long black hair.
Why was I being held in there?
Their skin shivered as they rose to their feet, teeth chattered and goosebumps appeared across their skin. Avalign took a gander at the room. It was dark, but they could see clearly. A circular room with stone walls etched with all kinds of strange inscriptions and some kind of ancient coffin at the center. The coffin is where they were being held just moments prior.
How long was I... In there?
The only thing Avalign understood in the room left them with more questions. Written along each side of the thick stone coffin was a phrase, clearly intended to be a form of message, maybe even a warning.
"For this, an oath we had to break. Only death will remain when you awake." They understood the words, and it did not take long for Avalign to apply it to themselves, considering they were the one who was sealed away.Avalign wasn't allowed much time to dwell on it. All of a sudden a voice boomed through the chamber.
"YOU... YOU SHOULD NOT BE AWAKE." The loud voice didn't echo, despite the empty chamber. It was like it had spoken directly into Avalign's head.
"Please... What is going on? Who am I?" Their voice was slightly raspy, deep but not overly masculine. Their voice echoed for a few painstakingly empty moments, only to be met with silence. It appeared the voice didn't feel the need to grace them with an answer. The silence was soon to be broken though, the sound of cracking glass and quiet metal groans could be heard. Avalign turned to face the source of the sound, only to be met with a monstrosity coming into existence out of the wall. The entity seemed to just appear, as if it had slowly permeated through the wall hand first, its glass physique leaving a slight blur on the wall behind it as it awkwardly moved. Once it emerged it unveiled a long slitted eye, the obsidian iris stated right at Avalign and then the creature began to move again. It was large, nearly the height of the room, which Avalign estimated to be about twelve feet tall. At first the towering behemoth was slow, but it quickly changed its motion into a charge towards Avalign, who looked away nervously with an arm raised towards it.
"I do not wish to fight." A glowing wire of energy spiralled out of Avalign's hand, as well as a perpetually dark one, each of the two seeming to want to swallow each other. A hum sounded out before a blast and a gust of air flew through the air, blowing Avalign's hair around. It took Avalign a second to put their hand down and look back in that direction. It was gone, so was the energy in their hand. They stood confused not knowing what they had just done.
Enough of this place.Avalign looked at the ceiling and jumped, instantly shattering through it headfirst, only to be met with a couple more stone ceilings that they would manage to break through effortlessly before finally reaching fresh air and a gorgeous ray of sunlight shined down upon them. Taken aback, Avalign was blinded for a moment before gazing down from the mountaintop that they were now standing upon. It was a beautiful view, beneath the snowy mountain was a vast land of virgin forest. Birds flew through the sky and all seemed at peace.
With a single step, Avalign fell all the way down from the mountaintop. Before they landed, they managed to float for a brief moment, they didn't want to harm the land. Feet touched the grass for the first time and the cool earthy floor was a welcome reprieve from the musty ground in the chamber. They walked forward, taking in all the beauty of the forest around them. The scenery was serene and brought peace to Avalign's wandering mind. They were a lost soul, not knowing their past, their identity or purpose. The gentle breeze against their face only made them calmer. They continued to walk in a tranquil manner, not disturbing the woods or wildlife around them until something had popped into their head.
Avalign's eyes went wide and they could hear their heart pounding in their ribcage, the repetitive fast-paced thumping reverberating into their mind as the sounds of screams played through their head, visions of red, ashes and burning fire. They fell to the floor on their knees, almost as if the scene in their head brought them physical agony. Eyes still wide and unblinking and forehead digging into the soil beneath them, with their hands clasped over the ears, feebly attempting to stop the sounds. Avalign's hair was slowly losing all pigmentation, turning to a ghostly white in the same manner a chameleon's color changes. A deep black slowly crept over the whites of their eyes, leaving nothing but the bloodshot iris. When Avalign's eyes became completely coated, all the noise and visions stopped. They heard a man's voice deep within their head, but it uttered only one word, and only uttered it once before the pitch black nothingness returned.
DEMON.
