Long ago when StarClan existed, there were only four Clans:

ShadowClan
RiverClan
WindClan
They lived together under the protection of StarClan, that is until the last battle. The Dark Forest Cats defeated the Clans and used the StarClan cats as slaves. The Clans, trying their best to flee the Dark Forest Cats, separated.
Many Seasons later on, united as Six.

DuskClan
LakeClan
MountainClan
WinterClan
Together they live in a circular world. Untill the Last Battle.
The terrible battle where the Dark Mountain cats powered with the Dark Forest Cats won.
Ever since, the clans have been going through alot of pressure, for every year, five cats from each clan come together in battle.
This is called The Hunter Games.
