Today marks the 182nd day I've been away from home. It's been exactly 6 months since I last saw him, the one person who believes in me. Or believed in me. I can't be sure anymore, it's been too long. But still, I can smell his cologne when I'm patrolling the city, on nights like this one. I feel like I am schizophrenic most of the time, because I see him around corners, in dark alleys, or even in coffee shops. In my defense, it looked like him at that one coffee shop. I'm desperate, okay? Give me a break.
The more days that pass, the more I'm starting to lose faith I can do what I sought out to do. But still, I know I have to find a way to push through. For my friends, my aunt. For Katsuki.
I look around me, a sigh falling off my lips and I jump up, giving myself a push and activate my quirk to enter the building from a side window. I've been patrolling this one for the last two weeks and I've found the safest way to enter, is through this one window on the eighth floor. Nobody has gone in or out in these two weeks so I think it's safe to explore a bit.
Dabi is thinking this could be the League's new lair, considering the bar was discovered (I don't know who snitched, I swear it wasn't me, definitely not that one time I drove around with Aizawa). My feet land on the ground and I start looking around.
Whoever left this place, left in a rush, because there is still furniture here. A few pictures of children on the wall indicate this was a home, maybe a family.
I look around, making sure the place is empty and sit in the living room. I find a remote and try to turn on the TV. And how lucky I feel, when the TV actually turns on. I don't question why the owners left everything like this, I'm just grateful I get to watch something, because it's been, well, a long time since I had the chance to do this.
At the league, we don't watch the news and I really need to see what's going on in the outside world, perhaps, maybe even a friendly face having saved someone.
I flip through the channels when I find one talking about a hero named "Great Explosion Murder God Dynamight" having saved a kitten. I start laughing at the name. Who would even name themselves something like that?
As if on cue, I hear a cat meowing and a whisper trying to sush it. I immediately stand up, ready for combat. I round the corner, only to see a little kid holding a cat in his arms. His eyes were puffy and still red. How long has this kid been here?
I let my hands rest on my sides, ready to attack if needed, but I sit down and take the cat from the kid. The kid looks at me puzzled, sniffing away his tears. I examine the cat, realising it is the one from the news, the one the hero with the stupid name saved. I look at the kid again and motion for him to stand up. He follows me, still sniffing, and we sit together on the couch.
I offer him some snacks and he hesitates, before grabbing one. I smile and he seems grateful for the food, the kid must be starving. How long has he been here alone? I haven't seen anyone come in or out. Either I'm blind or this kid has been here for two weeks and I don't like any of the two scenarios.
"What's your name, kid?" I ask him, hoping for...I don't even know what I was hoping for.
He just stares at me, a ghost of a smile on the kid's lips. "If you won't tell me your name, at least tell ne how long you've been here?"
The kid sighs and starts moving his hands around quickly and whispering, almost inaudible words.
That's when it hits me, the kid is deaf.
"Can you read lips?" I ask and he nods. This could give me the information I need. "Do you live here?" He gives me a thumbs down. "Did you live here?" Thumbs up. "Where do you live now?" He shrugs and pets the cat sitting comfortably in his lap.
"Is it a girl?" I ask and he nods. "Can I pet her?" He looks at me hesitantly, before giving me a slow nod. I start petting the cat. "Did your parents get her for you?" He nods, his full attention on the cat now.
"Do you know where your parents are?" He doesn't reply, but I see him getting tense. "Do you want me to take you somewhere?" He looks up at me and just stands up, the cat jumping from his lap and standing next to him.
Before I can ask where to take him he grabs my hand and drags me to the window. Could he have a quirk like mine?
He just stares at me, expectantly. "Do you know what my quirk is?" He shakes his head no and jumps at the window sill, sitting with his legs dangling outside of the building. Does this kid have a death wish?
The cat jumps on his shoulder and sits with him. Then the cat jumps and the boy lets go, jumping with his cat.
My eyes widen. What do I even do?
I don't have much time to think, so I just jump and boost myself towards the ground. I manage to grab both the kid and the cat and use my quirk to land us all safely.
"What were you thinking, kid???" I shout at the kid and he just gives me a sheepish smile. "Why are you smiling?" My suspicions immediately raise. I shouldn't have done that, what if the kid is with-
I try to jump up but it's useless. My quirk's gone. I start running but I hit something hard and fall down. I look up, and before I can even begin to process what is going on, there are handcuffs on my wrists.
I scan my surroundings as I should have done a few moments earlier, avoiding all of this mess. And I spot him, as I was expecting. Aizawa is here.
I look where the kid was supposed to be and I see no one there. I turn around again, towards the wall I hit. And it's no other, than the reason I'm doing all of this.
"Hi, babe"
Katsuki fucking Bakugou.
