This is a story that explains to us human beings why the trees and Squirrels from our time are the way they are now. Back then, the trees would get up and walk around using their roots as feet. The trees could go anywhere they wanted to. They could even go in the ocean, if they were tall enough. The Squirrels that lived in them would have to hide and hold on tight, or they would fall. Mother Nature gave them tails to help them walk, and claws to help them run and climb up trees. Their small bodies so they can be quick and get in and out of small places fast and easy. But then she made them give something in return. Something for the gifts that she gave them out of the 'kindness' of her heart . Sadly, they had nothing to give her, so she took away the tree's ability to move. The Squirrels had a hard time adjusting to their new life without the traveling trees. The squirrels traveled for a long time, carrying their food around with them. Soon, the squirrels found a tree that could still walk. The tree wasn't a tree at all. It was Mother Nature's son. He had brown pants and dark green hair. At first, the squirrels were scared he would take something else away from them, but when the boy bent down and set his basket down for the squirrels to climb into, they trusted him and jumped in, finally able to put the food down. The boy picked his basket up and brought it to his house. There was a tree in the middle of the house, and there was a hole in the middle of it. The boy held the basket up to the hole, and the squirrels climbed into it, taking their food supply with them. One squirrel peaked out of the tree when the boy had turned around and climbed out. The squirrel raced to the boy and climbed up his back before perching on his shoulder. The boy laughed and left the house with the squirrel on his shoulder. The other squirrels watched as the boy left with their friend, before going back down the hole of the tree and making it look more like the holes of the walking trees. Soon, Mother Nature came into the boy's home and saw the tree. She looked inside it and saw the sleeping squirrels inside. She became furious that her son had let the squirrels in the last of the walking trees. The squirrels woke up when the boy returned home and ran out to greet him. Mother Nature was mad and wanted to hurt the squirrels, but the boy refused to let her do that. Instead of Mother Nature punishing the squirrels, the boy gave a few of the squirrels wings. He started by making skin grow between the squirrel's arms and chest, fusing them together to make wings. At first, the squirrels were terrified of what was happening to their bodies, but after the wings grew, the boy told them to hurry to the top of the tree and try it out. The squirrels scurried to the top of the tree and jumped off, spreading their arms out and catching the wind under the new wings. The squirrels that the boy had chosen loved the new wings and the other Squirrels wanted something from the boy too. But the boy wasn't done with the flying squirrels. He shrank a few of them and made them into what we call dwarf squirrels. The other flying squirrels were afraid now. The boy turned to the remaining flying squirrels and turned half of them into Kashmir flying squirrels and a few more into Sumatran flying squirrels. He turned more squirrels into Indoschinese flying Squirrels. The boy turned to the other squirrels and turned ninety of them into ground squirrels. He turned thirty of the ground squirrels into spotted ground squirrels. He turned thirty more into round-tailed ground squirrels. He turned ten into thirteen-lined ground squirrels. He made more and more types of squirrels until there were more than 200 different species of squirrels. The newly made squirrels didn't know what to do. They looked around and before they had a chance to move, the boy spread them across the world. And that is why there are so many different species of squirrels around the world.
