“Hey Talia, you doing anything this Saturday?”
I groaned, hitting my head against my desk. The one time an actual, attractive boy is maybe asking me out, and I’ve already got plans. And they aren’t even with a guy I’m interested in!
“I’m really sorry John, but Toby already asked me out for Saturday,” I replied, mad at myself for making plans, even though I’d had no idea this would happen. John and I had been talking every night since that first Tuesday when he’d phoned me. He’d been really sweet and understanding, not even getting mad when I mentioned that I’d revealed him as my source in my argument with Keira.
“Oh. Toby, that’s your friend from the music store, right?” John asked quietly.
I nodded, forgetting he couldn’t see me.
“Talia? You there?”
“What, oh, yeah, sorry John. Yes. Toby is my friend from the music store. My friend. Nothing more. We just happen to have plans on Saturday, and I phrased it badly.” I explained, tripping all over my words as I guessed why John went so quiet.
“Ah. I see. Well, are you doing anything on Sunday? One of my favourite bands is in town, and they’ve got two shows this weekend, down at The Green,” John explained, his voice much happier and back to normal volume.
“Nope, I’m free Sunday, and I’d absolutely love to go with you! Only, will they let me in? I’m not 18 yet, you know…” I reminded John, getting worried that he’d think I was just not interested and give up.
“Yeah, it’s an all-ages gig, so as long as you aren’t drinking you should be sweet. I’ll pick you up, it starts at seven, so around six-thirty maybe? We can eat there, if you want,” John offered.
I grinned happily, glad this time that he couldn’t see my ridiculous face. “Yay! I’ll be looking forward to it all week now!”
“Me too. I’ll talk to you later then, okay?”
“Sure. Bye,” I answered, too excited to notice that he’d hung up before I’d replied.
