I walk out of my apartment into the loud streets of New York.

Despite it being relatively early, traffic has already started and honking can be heard all throughout the streets. This place really lives up to it's name.

Lucky for me, the institute is a 10 minute walk from my loft. That distance may be far for some people but there's a coffee shop along the way so I'm not complaining.

Actually I'm complaining.

I couldn't sleep for shit last night. I was up way too long thinking about that dude from the institute.

I sigh in relief as a finally see the sign of the institute meaning I made it. It took longer than expected but at least I even showed up.

I enter through the doors and the first person I see is the boy from yesterday and his dad waiting for the coffee machine to finish making coffee.

The boy smiles at me. I was going to smile back but I remembered his father's words and decided to give him a friendly but reserved nod instead.

I feel a little guilty when I see a look of disappointment on his face.

Why I care so much about his feelings is a mystery in itself.

I sit down in my desk and do normal work activities as the day goes by.

My shift ends and I waste no time grabbing my stuff and clocking out.

I take out a pack of cigarettes and light one. I've been waiting all day to do it since we're not allowed to have smoke breaks.

I first started smoking as a coping method after my old lover went M.I.A.

Some high school druggies knew some people so it wasn't hard to get cigarettes if I wanted some.

I had never intended to get addicted but life never works out in my favor. It also slowly kills me which saves me the trouble of doing it myself so I don't mind.

Since there's no ashtrays, I flick my cigarette out on the street and continue walking.

"Ma'am! Wait!"

I turn around and see the boy who's responsible for my lack of sleep.

"My shift is over so I can no longer help you, sorry."

I try and turn around and walk away but my wrist is grabbed.

His hands are warm and soft compared to my cold ones which are probably rough.

"No, I um just wanted to thank you."

"For what?"

"Your hospitality of course."

"Well that's my job so don't be surprised."

"Right well I also wanted to apologize for my father's behavior."

"Nothing I haven't been through before. Anyways you should get back inside before they send a search party for you."

"Right well bye then."

I wave and continue walking with a small smile on my face and a hint of blush.
