After a day filled with incessant busyness, it's half-past ten at night. Standing on the porch of my home, I rummage through my bag in search of my key, solely to unlock the door.

At last, I found it. Hearing the crack of the door opening, my father, seated and watching TV, turns his gaze towards me and smiles faintly. He then attempts to rise.

"Stay seated, Dad," I say as I remove my apron and place it on the dining table before heading to the kitchen for a glass of water.

"How was your day, sweetheart?" he calls out from the living room.

"Just the usual, Dad. Patients, check-ups, sitting in the clinic," I reply with a weary voice, rolling my eyes, even though at that moment he wanted to offer me a glass of water, something he always does, and I keep him seated. His current health doesn't permit such activity, and with each passing day, his declining health worries me more.

"When did Chang leave the house?" I added to the conversation, swallowing a gulp of water after saying the previous line.

"Maybe about 20 minutes before you arrived; I didn't really check the clock, but that's my guess," Dad answered, pressing the remote to change the channel.

"Did you take your medicine that you're supposed to have an hour before dinner?"

"Chang has already given it to me," he replied, still facing the TV.

Alright then, I'll freshen up. We can have dinner together later. And don't you start fussing and getting up to set the table," I said with a gentle chide, but Dad just laughed, offering no reply.

Seizing the apron from atop the dining table, I ascended to my room. Flinging open the door, I plunged onto the bed, sprawling like a starfish. Straightening my spine, I could hear the creak of my bones. Thus seated in the chamber, my entire body had ossified.
