Chapter 17

Ni'awtu wakes up the next morning, finding herself in her hammock next to Lo'ak.
She sits up, causing Lo'ak to wake up as he feels her move.

"Hey what's wrong?" He asks her.
"What happened? Last night" Ni'awtu asked.
"You cried yourself to sleep" Lo'ak says as he gives her a half hearted smile, "so I bought you back and let you sleep. I did not want to wake you."

Ni'awtu nods and looks down.
Lo'ak holds onto her hand, "it's going to be okay."
"I hope he tells Tox. I don't know what else to do" Ni'awtu says the Lo'ak.
"Your father is a good man. I'm sure he will understand and tell Tox the truth" Lo'ak replies.

Ni'awtu smiles and rests her head on Lo'ak's shoulder, "Thankyou."
"I told you. I will be here for you" Lo'ak replies, leaning his head on to Ni'awtu's.

"Where are we going?" Tox asks as Ni'awtu is holding onto his hand, walking with him through the forest.
"You will see" Ni'awtu replied.
"Where's Lo'ak? Is he not coming with us today?" Tox asks.
"He will be here soon" Ni'awtu replies.

They come to the spirit tree.
"Wow" Tox runs forward, looking up at the tree as it's glowing.
"This is the spirit tree. This is where we talk to people who are with Eywa" Ni'awtu says.
"You can see Eywa?" Tox asks and looks to her.

Ni'awtu kneels down next to him, "Eywa is our great mother. She holds us all in her heart. When it is our time, our bodies stay here but our spirits return to her."
Tox nods, only understanding half of what Ni'awtu said.

Ni'awtu brings Tox's queue forward.
"I'm right next to you. Okay?" Ni'awtu says to him.
Tox nods.
Ni'awtu brings his queue forward and makes him connect his queue to the tree.

She then holds onto his hand and looks forward, using her other hand to bring her queue forward and connect to the tree. She closes her eyes.

This time she sees the forest. She looks forward and sees Tox walking. She walks behind him quietly, not wanting to disturb him.
"Where am I?" Tox asks himself.
"Son?" Heukxo walks out from behind the tree.
He looks up and sees Ni'awtu but she shakes her head no, so Heukxo does not let Tox know Ni'awtu is there.

"Father? Is that really you?" Tox asks.
Heukxo nods, "it's me son. Come."
He kneels down and opens his arms out to Tox.
Tox runs to him and hugs him.
"I've missed you" Tox says.
Heukxo holds on to Tox tightly.

He looks up at Ni'awtu with tears in his eyes.
She smiled back having tears in her eyes.
Tox moves away from his father and looks to him, "why haven't you come back home? I've been waiting for you to come back."

"Oh Tox" Heukxo looks at him with sorry eyes.
"Sister Ni'awtu says that this is where the spirits stay. With Eywa. Are you a spirit?" Tox asks.
"Son. Our energy is borrowed from Eywa, and one day we have to give it back" Heukxo says.

"So.. you're never coming back?" Tox asks.
Heukxo let's out a sob, put his head down to hold himself together, before looking back at his son, "I am always going to be here son. Whenever you need me, I will be here."

He takes Tox's hand and holds it, putting it on Tox's chest where his heart is.
"I will be right here. In your heart son" Heukxo says.

Ni'awtu opens her eyes and unconnected her queue.
She shakes Tox, to get him to open his eyes before disconnecting his queue.
"Are you okay?" Ni'awtu asks him as he's looking away.
Tox pushes her away, "you lied to me."

"Tox please let me explain" Ni'awtu says but Tox does not listen.
"You lied! You said he will come back!" Tox shouts.
He runs off.
"Tox wait!" Ni'awtu stands up to run after him.
