My eyes flickered open, they squinted as the bright sun shone through the gaps in my dark grey blind. I lifted myself upon to my elbows and glanced around my light blue room which bounced the sun's rays from wall to wall
"just another day" I sighed before collapsing down onto my back.
I could hear Oasis playing from the kitchen while the sweet smell of pancakes wafted under the door.
"Pancakes in the morning, mmm" I mumbled
I counted down from 3 and then continued to throw my covers and swing my legs over the side of my bed. I stretched my arms wide and made my way to the kitchen.
"Good morning sweet pea, and what an amazing morning it is" my roommate Evie beamed. Evie was my best friend. We'd met in high school when we were 14 before we both decided to get a flat share and jobs in our hometown of Vegas and waste our lives away on the sunny Strip . We were like chalk and cheese really but we knew each other inside out and back to front.
"Extra special pancakes for an extra special friend" she sang. She looked radiant as usual. Her long straight locks hung effortlessly from her shoulders and her pale pink dressing gown clung to her petit frame in all the right places.
"what do you want Evelyn?" I smirked as I sat at the breakfast bar to a ready set plate and cutlery
"can a girl not treat her roomie once in a while" she smiled innocently but her deep blue eyes gave away whatever cunning secret she was hiding
"just spit it out E" I asked impatiently
"well there is something, I need to ask a favour?!" she spoke sweetly
"well you know how my brothers in town next week and I said he could stay here with us, and it would only be for a few days .. "
"what's your point E?" I urged her to continue, she set 2 plates of syrup and bacon pancakes down and took her seat next to me and began to tuck in talking between mouthfuls
"well he asked if he could stay a little tiny bit longer" her voice began to slow
"E, you rent half this place, I'm not gonna begrudge you that, what with you never seeing him, as long as he leaves the toilet seat down" I giggled
I really didn't understand what all this breakfast and niceness was about and I knew there was another underlying motive
"I knew you'd understand Nat" she shoved the rest of her pancake in her mouth and a dollop of syrup fell from her mouth before standing from her stool
"and also his band mate Brandon will be staying too, thanks, got to get a shower, thanks Nat bye" her words ran from her mouth at lightning speed before she made a swift getaway to the bathroom
"Evie!" I bellowed after her but she was firmly locked in the bathroom and I was left listening to the sweet sounding tones of Wonderwall.
I sighed looking at my part eaten plate. Ronnie, Evie's big brother, had just joined a band and had been in Enjoins trying tirelessly to hit the big time. Now Ronnie was one of the funniest guys I knew and I loved having him stay, but I didn't feel quite so at ease about Brandon, I mean I didn't know anything about this guy, he could be a cold blooded killer for all I knew. My thoughts were out of my mind I knew, but I'd had a troubled past and it took allot for me to trust new people, never mind a new person living in my flat.
I'd been sat at the breakfast bar longer than I thought as Evie emerged from the shower, still in her gown and still glowing with her hair waving in its dampness.
She retook her seat next to me and placed her arm around my slumped shoulders
"you need to start to move on from your past Nat. I know it's been hard but this might be what you need. Meeting new people will be good for you, y'no, pushing your boundaries and stuff. You have a terrible thing happen, but you can't let it ruin your life hunny" she spoke softly and sympathetically
"E, it's just difficult for me, but I'll give it a go" tears welled in my eyes as I fought back images and memories that invaded my mind from that terrible night
"besides Brandon is a lovely guy and you love Ron, I won't let anything bad happen to you again, she clung tighter to me and rubbed my arm lovingly
"when are they due" I asked
"tomorrow, not til late so I should be home from work" she replied as she attempted to brush her hair with her fingers
"besides I've met Brandon and he is lush, quite the looker to" as Evie winked at me I noticed her hazel eyes were sparkling in the sunshine lit room, she really was stunning
"right well, I need to get ready for work" I muttered. As I got up to leave, Evie caught my pj sleeve
"you will love it when they get here Nat, believe me Natalie!" and with those final words I left for the shower and to get ready for my day job, Receptionist at Caesars palace, so very exciting....
I stared at my reflection in my floor length mirror, I glanced to the clock, 8.30am, an hour until work. As I looked back at my freshly showered body I grimaced back. My dark hair hung long and wet past my shoulders. My torso to my feet were straight like a pencil and I hated my legs which looked bony and bowed slightly at my knees which knobbled like spin tops. I traced my pale skinned arms, tiny little scars jigsawed to my collar bones which jutted from my shoulders before tracing the larger scars down my side. I sighed before picking my work clothes from the bed.
After dressing I took one final glance in the mirror. Fully clothed I didn't look so bad. My black Blazer and suit trousers tone down my deep blue shirt, adding a slick of mascara I grabbed my bag and headed out for another day of my life....
