As a child, my parents, teachers, and friends always told me I was a bit different from everyone else. I mean, they're not wrong, I guess. Even when I don't mean to, I tend to stray away from the other classmates. The other Eevee's can always talk to each other without much trouble while exploring our neighborhood creeks and ditches, but I just choose to sit in the sidelines.Perhaps this "talking to other people" isn't for me.
I'm not saying I'm scared to talk to anyone, I just haven't experienced much of the same energy that the others have when I was around the other Pokemon. But that's okay, I don't mind. I would just rather spend my time working and learning by myself than working with the other energetic fox-like mammals.
A foggy afternoon around a year ago, one of the pokémon living out in the uncontrolled depths of the forest had caught their eye on me.
"Oh,hello!Are you picking berries too?"
"Huh?" Hesitation spiraled inside me.
"Y'know, It's turning winter. If we don't get any berries soon, all the small pokémon will take them up."
Honestly, I don't remember what I was doing outside back then, but I was most certainly not picking any berries. I heard myself say, "Mhm."
From what I remember, they were a similar size to me, but they were a blue color. Its eyes were pitch black and it had a sort of spiky , long white ring around its neck. It was quadruped , just like me.The rest is largely a haze. You can't see it, almost as though if you put your hand out in a thick, humid fog in the early morning, it would disappear, as if it didn't ever exist. Me and this pokémon only talked every now and then, when we saw each other.they would always comment how protective i am, and it can be sort of annoying. I'd usually ignore it. I don't know where that old friend is now, but it doesn't really matter. I never even learned their name.
I guess my memory didn't take their "advice" very well.
It's a chilly, hazy night tonight. There is no longer any sun to remind us of the pain of the cold. Above us, the stars shined with light, like holes poked through the thick plastic of a bug container. Standing up from a short, but restful sleep. Looking down, my eyes got caught on my younger sister curled up into a ball next to my legs.
The cold weather is setting in soon. Who knows i when it will take its toll? There's probably nothing left for us.
Our small cave isn't doing us any good, either. Attempting to leave, a small shifting sound behind me was loud.Looking Back,my sister,Eevee, was sluggishly getting up.
"Where are you going?"
What do i say?What should I say?
"I'm, uh, I'm getting food."
"Can I come?"
"Eevee, It's cold. You don't want to get sick, do you?"
"Come on, I can handle it."
I gave her a long sigh.
Why does she still argue with me?
I trotted out of our cavern. Dead and rotten leaves being crushed with ginormous ,furry paws echoed around the cavern, exiting through a large opening. I knew I had no other choice.
Then it was silent. The cricket chirping was louder than before.
"Come on, Eevee."
The cold, breezy air soaked into my fur as soon as I set foot onto the unpleasantly wet, soft winter grass. The nearby river we live by was quiet,as usual. It's usually a pretty relaxed river. Lots of the trees had already become bare.Their branches exposed was a great place for some of the bird-like Pokémon to rest on.The moon glared down at us.It was a hazed yellow color,Filled to the brim. I remembered the exasperating times that I would take Eevee places somewhere , especially when the weather isn't it's best, I pondered,
You just get used to it, Eevee. I know you always complain about the cold, but it's late, and we really need to get this done.
Aggravated, we walked in silence , only able to listen to the sounds of early morning birds and chirping crickets to fill our ears. We passed some other Pokémon, some holding berries, giving us a deep glare. Recently, some of the Pokémon scavenging for berries have been a bit fanatical about it. I don't know if it's from a short supply , but some will even start fights to get some, which I understand. Unexpectedly, I heard a voice yelp right behind me.
"Espeon , I'm cold!" My younger sister cried.
I groaned. "Eevee, you were the one who wanted to come with me. "
I scanned the area for any trees, looking for smooth bark at the rim all the way up to its brawny branches, with some leaves just hanging on. That would mean a good quality berry because the tree still has nutrients, even though the leaves were falling off, but that is expected for a tree.
I found some that seemed promising, but turned out to be completely empty. Every time I got tricked, I slowly lost more hope on this trip. Again, i heard behind me,
"My fur is getting all damp and gross! Uck!"
I scoffed, not saying a word.
"Espeon, my paws hurt. Can we please take a break?"
"Nah." I mocked her in a joking manner.
"Please?"
"No." I snapped, sharpness in my breath as I held my breath together. "The longer we wait and take these breaks, we aren't gonna find anything else because it was all taken up."
She hesitated for a moment. "Ok , sorry." I could hear the dramatic moodiness in her voice.
It got awkwardly quiet again, and I felt a bit sorry for snapping.
"Sorry , Eevee. I've just been worried about whether we will be able to have much food this year."
She didn't say anything back, which made me feel a bit more self conscious.
Out of the blue she yelled, "I think that berry tree has food in it!"
I glanced over where she was looking.
"Uh, no?"
She huffed, "Why do you always assume i'm dumb? There's berries in that tree!"
It clearly wasn't even a berry tree at all, let alone if it was,or would have any berries in the first place. Not the type that I like to eat.
It was a tree crowded next to other ones, and its branches looked brittle. It was probably dying. That isn't a good sign for food.
I scoffed, "Because, maybe you are dumb."
"I am not!" She became bitter.
"Ok, it doesn't even matter. Me arguing about something that is right and you're too afraid to admit it isn't going to get us food any faster."
Her facial expression told me everything. "Maybe we can keep going if you stop mocking me!"
"See? You just admitted it!" I chuckled.
She hinted incredulous anger out of her face. "What? I did not-"
She hesitated in frustration before cutting herself off, "It doesn't matter!"
I snickered. "Let's go."
A bit later, my eyes caught on a few trees next to a lake. They looked healthy, so I walked over to one of the light-barked trees and saw not a trace of any berries.
Great.
"Espeon, maybe none have grown yet."
I grumbled. "Eevee, why would berries grow now? Let alone, why would they just start to grow? Winter is just around the corner."
She scoffed. "I knew that. I was just being sarcastic. Learn to take a joke."
Me and her continued walking around the forest.Eevee's head took a turn, looking at the whole source of the river we lived near.
A waterfall.
Honestly, we never really ventured out this far before, because I feel more safe staying near the cave, but I think Eevee was enjoying this. The waterfall was loud. it was Mediterranean-blue in color. Its magical beauty was swishing over the rocks joyfully. It was thundering down into the pool like a gigantic water spout. When it toppled into the ecstasy-pool, it foamed it at the bottom.
An unexpected long and strong breeze blew in, shaking all the trees around us and even some of the leaves snapped off their branches and flew around with the rest of the dead , crunchy leaves that got picked up by the wind. The flowing water was easily pushed with the current, heading straight at us.
The mist blew onto our fur. It felt as if it froze as soon as it came into contact with our matted fur. Eevee gasped, probably from the freezing cold water, before exclaiming, "Oh my goodness!"
By the time we had scurried off, the wind had calmed down. Eevee charged into a big bush, but quickly shot out. Going into a bush might have not been a good idea.
I chuckled, "You okay?"
She didn't respond. She stuck her head into the bush again, before sticking it out again, looking at me.
"Espeon, I think I found a berry tree."
"We don't have time. Eevee."
"I'm serious!"
I stuck my head slowly into the prickly bush. The leaves were frigid, which probably is why Eevee ran out so quickly. She probably thought it would give her some warmth.
She struck out her shaky paw.It pointed at a thick, smooth-barked tree with a few leaves left. It looked healthy for the weather conditions , so I can see where Eevee was heading for.
"See,i'm not stupid." Eevee barked.
I crawled out of the bush, walking closer to the tree. I could see a few berries inside, hidden away.
I closed my eyes softly. Sitting down onto the soft and cool grass,I said the words in my head.
Concentrate, Espeon. Open your third eye and let it seek beyond our reach.
All the thoughts in my head disappeared. It was replaced by an outline of the tree in a faint white color. Inside, a delicious red berry dangled off a branch, waiting to be picked. I couldn't seem to get my hands on it. In the background, swooshing in and out of my ears were the sounds of the soft and gentle wind that was left over from the strong gust.
Complete silence.
.
.
Until it wasn't.
"Espeon, There's a Jiggilypuff! Look! Look!"
It felt as if my brain was a piece of glass that had been shattered into a million pieces.I wanted to lash out at her for interrupting, but that's not going to solve anything,I suppose.
Exhaling slowly, I opened my eyes, looking behind at Eevee, noticing the Pokémon she was interrupted about. It was a spherical shape, like a pink gum ball with pointed ears with black insides and large, blue eyes. It has small, stubby arms and feet. On top of its head is a curled tuft of fur.Its teal eyes glowed within the darkness of the forest. However, it looked distressed. It was obviously trying to get our attention. Eevee leaned over to it.
"Hey, are you okay?"
It mumbled, looking back at me, and then at my sister. It exclaimed in fear, like it was trying to tell us something.
The thing is, we couldn't understand it.
"Espeon, it's just saying its name. It can't understand us and we can't understand it!"
I looked down at the small ball in confusion.
I'm sorry, but I can't help you.
It's eyes leaned over behind us.Then the Jiggilypuff abruptly ran behind, pushing us aside as my head followed it like a fish caught into a net. It ran to the tree, putting its stubby arms up in the air and caught a falling berry. It was the same bright red berry that i saw.Instantly, it ran off into a bush, and before I knew it, Eevee was pushing through my legs and disappeared into the bush. I didn't even realize it at first, but when I did, I was unpleasantly astounded. My blood was boiling.
She just ran off into the depths of this gigantic forest!
I was always taught to never run off, especially somewhere you don't know, and I even told Eevee that before, but it doesn't really matter right now. I just need to focus on getting to her before she gets herself into more trouble than she needed to.
In an instant, I chased after her, with an unknown destination in mind, but with a goal that I wanted to accomplish.
