She knew it was a lie. She could hear the way he forced the words from his lips, see the glimmer of resentment in his eyes as studied her face. And yet she knew she would stay, she knew she wouldn't leave until their inevitable divorce.
Divorce, the word made cold hard dread settle in. It made fear grip her chest, it made everything feel too real. Maybe she was delusional for staying even though she knew he resented her, hated her even. But she couldn't leave; she depended on the man. She couldn't survive without Derek.
It hurt knowing he was in love with another woman, though he denied saying things like "We're just friends", or, "We're fine, Addie, everything's fine.'' She could hear the lie behind his words, see the annoyance on his face, she could almost feel the hatred in his gaze burning through her.
Lies, the remainder of her relationship would be built on a lie. Until everything came toppling down, until their inevitable divorce.
