"What is it Kaida?" My mother knelt beside me, her ashy grey hair chopped to a low bob, grey eyes gazing at me softly. Her skin was pale and bony, with faint scratches on her cheekbones and forehead, her knuckles tainted with bruises from her battle a couple days prior to her return home.
"My hands, they're burning." I look at my palms, engulfed in tiny sparks of fire, the flame getting larger as my panic heightened. I started crying, tears hot on my face.
"Fire? But, how? From where?" My mother carried me to the hose at the edge of our house, stepping over the flower bed she was planting before coming to my aid. She tried to diffuse the flames with the water, but they kept coming back, growing stronger each time as my throat burned with the effort of crying.
"What the hell? Yuri! Get over here now!" She yelled for my father as he came sprinting out of his office, an alarmed look on his face as he took in the fire surrounding my mother and I.
"What are you standing there for? Do something!" Said my mother as I screamed louder, the flames now catching on her loose cardigan.
"Fuck, ow!" She dropped me from her lap, swatting away at the fire burning through her clothes. My father rushed to her aid, grabbing the hose and washing away the remaining spark. I sat on the wet concrete, terrified at what I had done.
"It's coming from her Yuri. It's coming from Sunako." I heard my parents frantically rush away from me, clutching onto each other as they looked at me in horror.
"But, she already got her quirk. Super strength, was it not? Do we just have a crazy strong daughter with fire powers?" My father walked up to me, grabbing my arms as he attempted to control the flames.
"Yuri, a 5-year old can't push a whole fucking truck. She has two quirks!" My mother came to my other side, pinching my wrists.
"Get a grip Sunako, stop crying!" I tried to calm myself, but I couldn't even take a full breath before my anxiety resurfaced, the fire in my hands growing as it did.
"Stop it Sunako! You're hurting us!" That sentence might as well have been a fire extinguisher taking out the fiery sensation clouding my whole body. I stopped shaking as the flames subsided, replaced by a warm soothing steam.
"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry mummy." I tried to reach for them, waited for them to embrace me and accept my forgiveness. What I didn't expect was to get kicked across the lawn by my father, as he turned his fury to my mother.
"You bitch, you cheated on me didn't you?" He fisted the collar of her shirt, pressing her back against the back of the house.
"I didn't I swear! If I did then it doesn't explain why she has neither of our quirks, she should've at least gotten mine!" She pushed him away, reaching for her throat and wincing when she felt the bruise surfacing.
"Daddy, it's not mummy's fault. I didn't mean to do it, I swear I didn't! But he was being mean and-" I was cut short as my father came up to me and yanked on my hair, dragging me along the grass and into our house. I screamed for my mother to come and stop him, but she watched him take me. Just as she watched him beat me later that day.

The bell rang for the end of school on my second day at U.A. I took my time gathering my supplies as the rest of the class made their way out the classroom, Mina and Jirou lingering behind to wait for me.
"You guys go ahead." I told them, slinging my bag over my shoulder.
"You sure? We can wait."
