Ellie POV
We're heading up this giant hill on our horses with Anastasia in front. I suddenly think about the night before. I hope I moved in my sleep before she woke up. In my defence it was cold, I had woken up in the middle of the night to me hugging here in my sleep and it was warm so I couldn't be bothered to move but god now I wish I did. Maybe she didn't see me when she woke up. If she did she would probably be saying something snarky right about now so I don't think she did.
Anastasia stops all of a sudden.
" what's wrong?" Joel asks while we make it closer to the girl in front. "Wow." is all I can say.
"It's fucking beautiful." Anastasia is right, it is.
A giant house that has been coved in trees and flowers. It looks unreal. We get off our horses and start to walk towards the front door.
"There might be some supplies in here that we can take." Anastasia says. Joel nods then opens the door with this gun in hand to make sure it's clear of infected and it is.
"Oh my god" I say stunned by what's in front of me. This house is incredible.
"Is it just me or does this looked to well kept, like someone's living here." Anastasia says with impeccable timing.
"Don't move." A women says coming from the staircase holding us at gun point. "Put your guns down and move away from them."
"Everything's okay, i'm sorry we didn't know anyone was living here and we can just be on our way." Joel's say to the women while placing his gun on the table in front of him.
"Mum?" I hear Anastasia say.
"Ana? Oh my goddess your all grown up what are you doing here?" the women says standing still in shock. I guess that's the end of our journey with Anastasia. She got what she came for, to find her mother and here she is.
Then we hear a noise coming from up stairs, it frightens everyone in the room, making Joel pick his gun back up. All of a sudden an infected comes out from behind Anastasia's mother. Joel starts shooting at it but his to late. The runner has made its way to her mum tearing a chunk of her neck out. The infected starts racing down the stairs towards us but luckily enough Joel is able to get it in time.
I can only imagine what Anastasia must be thinking right now, having to see her mother get killed right in front of her own eyes. I look over at her expecting to see her cry, scream show any kind of emotion, but she doesn't. She just stands there looking at the body of her mother, completely emotionless. Then suddenly she snaps out of her trance.
"We should leave, there might be more coming." Anastasia says making her way to the front door but not before I place a hand on her shoulder making her turn to face me."
"Anastasia." I say before she cuts me off.
"Let's just go." She says firmly looking into my eyes before heading out.
I've never seen this side of her before now. She always seemed like the kind of girl to just breakdown in a moment of crisis but she stays practical making us follow her out.
We get on to our horses. The ride to the next checkpoint is silent no one daring to break the silence.
