Only human??? (A Rose hathaway story)

Chapter 10 - Fire

I awoke to the sound of the fire drill. The sound was loud and awfully annoying. I snuggled closer into my covers, blocking out the sound.

I was shaken awake from Lissa.

Lissa, the girl who I was sending to her death bed. The girl I have befriend and lied too. I felt sick just looking into her emerald green eyes. I had to remind myself that this was all for Ridley.

"Rose" Lissa snapped, " We need to go , a fire has broken out, and it's spreading fast"

"Can't the moroi, use water magic" I casually asked back

By know smoke was flooding through the door. But the moroi would put it out.

Right?

"They can't, the source of the fire is too strong" she said back

"What do you mean, wait a moroi started it"?

"Yes " she urgently said " We have to go, now "

I flung the covers off, and quickly slipped on my slippers. I was wearing a black vest top and a pair of demin shorts. My hair was in a high ponytail and I had no make up on.

Lissa was wearing pink spotty pymaies , and her hair was in two pigtails. She looked so innocent and sweet. How could I hurt her?

I grabbed her hand and started to pull her to the door. We were both coughing now , as the smoke started to enter our lungs. Outside the door I could hear cries for help. They sounded desperate and in pain. It broke my heart, into two.

I wonder if Dimtri was safe and outside of the building. That would be my wish, for him to be okay. I don't know why, but I just had this feeling.

I could just leave lissa now, they wanted her dead and I don't think it would matter how she went. They would probably torture her too. This fire would kill her faster and less painful But I couldn't bring myself to do that.

I opened my door and was welcomed with a unbearable pain of heat. I could feel my skin start to get very itchy and horrible. I slammed the door shut and I could hear a wail escape Lissa' s lips.

"We are trapped , aren't we" she cried

I went straight to her, feeling the need to comfort her.

"Hey" I said " We are going to get out , I promise"

My eyes skimmed my room and landed on the window. We could climb on the sill and up to the roof , and then down the drain pipe. We can survive this.

"Through the window" I said

From the look on Lissa' s face I could see that she thought this plan would work.

"Before we go , I want to tell you something" she crocked "My parents died in a car crash, along with my brother and boyfriend. We were driving to a family dinner, my father said they'd be the death of us. " she gave a sad chuckle " a drunk taxi driver, was on the wrong side of the road. We got hit and went into a tree. I was the only one that was saved. I walked away with only a few bruises. That why I'm so special as I'm the only living dragomir left. I've never said that out loud to anyone. I just want to say thank you. I trust you with my life and you are the best friend I could ever had"

By the end of the speech , I felt terrible. I wanted to tell her everything about ridley and the shopping trip and about Tyler and Olivia, but I was speechless. I felt a tear drip off , my cheek.

"Come on" Lissa mumbled whilst giving me a sweet smile.

We quickly walked the short distance to my window and I opened it. Fresh air filled the room. I took a deep breath and looked down. I was on the 5th floor up. If one of us fell , it would be the end of us.

The door started to catch fire at the top.

"Quickly" I pushed Lissa to the window

"I can't do this" she trembled

"You can"

If she didn't do this soon, then the roof would collapse.

All the screams had died down. The only sound was of wood burning and crackling. It was a sicking sound to hear.

Outside I could see most of our friends and dimitri.

Dimtri , I could see the look of worry on his face. Outside the teachers and pupils were staring at us. Some crying others praying, for loved ones that hadn't made it. It was a disturbing sight to see. Everyone crying. Just like when lissa is murdered, I quickly push that thought out of my mind.

"Lissa go" I said

She carefully started to scale the edge of the window,.

I could hear gasps of shock outside. Lissa jumped onto the roof, breathing heavily.

Now its my turn. I sit on the sill. So my legs are dangling out. It would be a long way down. I stood up and started to edge to the roof. My heart rate had increased dramatically and my knees were shaking. If Tyler could see this, he'd be laughing coldly. I lunged myself onto the roof, only just making it. I let go of a breath, that I was unaware of holding on to.

I was safe, for now.

Grabbing onto lissa I pulled her to the pipe. This would be the most difficult part. At the bottom I could see a crowd of people starting to gather around, urging us on. I could start to feel the heat evading the roof floor.

Lissa went first. She started to go down very slowly and stifly. Her steps were small and rigid, and her eyes were tightly closed. Which was very dangerous, if you add me. By the time , she got to the bottom, the roof started to crack and cave in. I wouldn't have time.

I was going to die. Part of me was relieved that lissa and dimitri were safe, but ridley wasn't.

"Rose" a sweet Russian accent called

I looked down, giving a fake smile

"Jump" he said

"What. Are you crazy " I screamed back. I started to sob, unable to stop it

"I'll catch you"

It was the best option left. It was that or stay and fall into a burning building

"Promise , you'll catch me" I asked

"Always"

Falling in air is a weird sensation. I felt like I was flying, but had this annoying pain all over my body. In the time that I was in the air, I had flashbacks. Of Tyler, Ridley ,Olivia, Dimtri and Lissa. I felt safe, even though I was in the air.

Suddenly a relaxing smell hit me.

Dimtri aftershave, I was safe and in his arms.
