He stumbled as he stepped onto the roof of a building and collapsed to his knees, his breaths coming off in strangled pants. He pulled off his mask and greedily gulped in lungfuls of air. Beads of sweat glistened on the skin of his cheeks and his forehead.

He roughly wiped it away, dirt from his suit staining his face as he did so. But he couldn't find it in him to care. He had been through the worst of fights before. He fought creatures big and small, powerful villains that desired to take over the people.

Yet this left him scarred.

His anxiety bubbled within his chest.

An ugly side of himself he wished to bury behind his mask.

An ugly side of him that was triggered after a fight.

A fight that he lost.

A loss he was condemned for.

He failed.

And they made sure he knew that through the looks of disapproval and disappointment they flung his way.

How could a hero fail?

How could the one and only spiderman fail?

Unbelievable.

Simply unacceptable.

Simply shameful.

He let out a shaky breath.

So disappointed in himself.

So ashamed of himself.

He called himself a hero.

Then how could he fail?

How could he lose this fight?

To be continued . . .
