"Mommy, do you think Dada will come back to us?"
Jennie looked over her shoulder and shrugged. She stopped chopping the vegetables, washed her hands, and went to her daughter.
"I don't know baby, it's been 10 years since she left us. You're just this little back then." She leveled her hand like the height of a little girl. "But I admit, I'm hoping she'll come back to us." A tear rolled down from Jennie's cheeks. She misses the love of her life.
She doesn't know how she'll explain everything to her child. That her wife is possibly dead by now.
"Hon please, Chiquita is still a baby! How can you not be selfish just this once?"
"Baby, listen to me." Jennie shook her head.
"No, baby. I can't. I don't want you to leave." She's holding Lisa as if her life depended on it.
"But that is my job, and it is my duty to serve my country. They need me, I have to go back there."
Jennie cried. Lisa kissed Jennie and slowly let go of her and went to kiss her sleeping daughter's head. "I love you both so much." She turned her back and wiped her own tears.
That was the last time Jennie saw and heard Lisa.
Chiquita hugged her mom.
"Mom, I know. I know what happened. I saw articles where Dada's name was written. Her body wasn't found. And still nowhere to be found until now."
Jennie cried harder. She hugged her daughter tight.
"I'm sorry for not telling you. I'm still hoping that she'll come back to us alive one day." Chiquita gently pushed her mom to face her. "You really look like your Dada. You've got everything about her."
Chiquita smiled. Her face is proud.
"Mother, I am the reminder that you cannot replace my Dada." She chuckled, and her mom pinched her cheek.
"I'm not. And I won't do that." For Jennie, no one can fill in Lisa's absence. No one can replace her inside her heart. Lisa is her soulmate.
"Sooooo, can I kick Kai's balls now?" Chiquita asked and Jennie nodded.
"You're doing that to every man that's trying to court me."
Jennie rolled her eyes and went back to cook. Leaving her child laughing.
---
Jennie and Chiquita were preparing for their flight. Chiquita's birthday is coming. Her grandparents promised to tour her to Thailand, they promised to bring her to her Dada's favorite places.
"This is my first time to get excited about vacation, Mommy!" It's true though, Chiquita never liked vacation, which means no school. She loves to go to school. She's determined to finish her course and run the company of their family. She wants her Mommy Jennie and Dada Lisa to be proud of her.
"You deserve this baby." Jennie ruffled her hair and fixed her bangs. Chiquita beamed and kissed her mom's cheek.
"I love you, mommy!" She always does that whenever her mom touches her forehead. Only her mom can do that.
"I love you too, you'll always be our baby, Canny."
--
They finally arrived in Thailand. Lisa's parents are waiting for them at the airport. Chiquita ran towards her grandparents and gave them the biggest hug.The guards took care of their luggage. "Thank you," Jennie said before greeting her in-laws. "Hello, Mom... Dad. It's been so long." She hugged them and a tear automatically rolled down her cheeks. Lisa's mom wiped it and smiled.
"We missed you and Canny. Let's go home. I have a surprise for both of you." Jennie looked at her and Lisa's Dad.
"Really?! I'm so excited!" Chiquita hugged her Grandpa as they walked on their way to the parking lot.
The car was filled with laughter. Chiquita was telling them stories about how she was shooing her mommy Jen's suitors.
"You did that?" Her grandpa asked and she nodded proudly.
"I just threw a dagger look at that GD boy and I think he peed on his pants. I don't like him or any of the suitors for my mom."
Jennie shook her head. She's sure that Lisa will be really happy if she heard this story from her daughter. She thinks Lisa will be proud of her.
"Mom is so beautiful that she has many admirers. I have to think of lots of ideas to shoo each one of them. Thankfully, mommy didn't scold me for pulling pranks on them though."
"I'm sure your Dada is so proud of you." Upon hearing that from her Grandma, Chiquita's heart was filled with joy.
Just as they arrived at the Manoban's Mansion, Chiquita excitedly went down the car. This was the first time she's seeing her Dada's home.
"Wow"
But what shocked her was the person waiting for them at their door. Chiquita's jaw dropped. And Jennie as well. She can't believe her eyes to see the person she's missing since forever.
"Hon" "Dada"
Jennie and Chiquita ran towards Lisa as she spread her arms and waited for them to hug her.
"I missed you." Jennie kissed Lisa.
"I missed both of you." Lisa ruffled Chiquita's head as they both hugged her tight.
Lisa knew that her wife has a lot of questions in her head. But for now, she's just thankful that she has her family in her arms now.
