Contrite

By james a. galgano

No act of contrition will suffice

In the heat of an inclement night

Where the eye of all storms appear

Like a foreboding premonition

Promising falsely to relieve

Your incurable condition

As if you were caught in a circular rendition

With an unforgettable melody that reminds

What has broken your heart

And left you alone in a dance for all time

Across the ballroom floor inconceivably designed

Unable to comfort your sorrow forever to come

While you without a life partner face each new sunrise

With a strained smile on aging face

As if it mattered what you might done to replace

The sorrow mainlined to your heart's discontent

As if every effort you made to procure eternal love

Was misplaced and misspent on misplaced devotion

Now your heart is left adrift upon an unwelcome ocean

Where your dreams wander forevermore

Searching for a welcoming port to find reprieve

From what once you thought would be

But in fact, never believed would prevail

Now you are left lost and lonesome.

Incarcerated in your own desires eternal jail

With no key or promise escape in sight

So, you are left alone with an act of contrition

Not of your own making that will not suffice

Nor offer hope or respite for each incoming inclement night.
