"Liz."
Lizzie looked up immediately once she heard the muffled gruff voice. Unsure if she was hearing things as she stood up. Her heart pounding in her chest as she looked into the eyes she loved so much.
"Liz." They tried to say again.
"Let me get a doctor." Lizzie ran outside and yelled for someone. They told her to wait outside as Jeremy and Scarlett were walking down the hall to see everyone running in Y/N's room.
"Lizzie, what happened?" Jeremy asked nervously. "Please don't say what I think you're saying."
"They're awake." Lizzie said breathlessly. "They said my name. I thought I was hearing things but then they said it again. So I stood up and then I looked straight into their eyes." She ran her hands through her hair. "Oh my god. They're awake. Y/N's awake."
"What?" Jeremy asked her. Confused by everything.
"They're awake." Lizzie said as it finally sunk in for them all.
"That's amazing." Jeremy said as he pulled Lizzie in for a hug. The two crying tears of joy.
"You can go in now. They're still not really able to talk much because of the strain on their vocal chords." The doctor told them. "I will be back later with a nurse to change their dressings and we will go somewhere private to talk about their condition."
"Thank you doctor." Lizzie said as Jeremy was the first in the room. He smiled lightly when he saw Y/N's eyes open between the gauze that remained on their face.
"Hey." Y/N greeted hoarsely.
"Don't strain yourself buddy." Jeremy said as he walked towards them. "I am just so happy your awake. So fucking happy."
"Me too." Scarlett and Lizzie said in unison as they stood beside him. The three of them sat together as they told them about what they missed. Feeling happy with them being here.
"I'm sorry." Y/N croaked out as the three of them looked confused. "I wasn't concentrating fully."
"No Y/N. Don't blame yourself." Jeremy told them. "You went in the race without a clear head."
"We're just happy you're awake." Scarlett said as Lizzie wiped her eyes. She was happy to have her best friend back.
"Ok. Are we ready for the treatment." The doctor said as he knocked on the door.
"Yes." Y/N muttered as the three stood up.
"We'll be back soon." Lizzie told them with a soft smile. Leaving the room as the nurses and another doctor walked in. The other leading the three to the relatives room.
"So Y/N has had some pretty nasty 3rd degree burns to their face and neck." They started as the three listened. "We may need to enter a tube to their ear and do an ear transplant so they may be able to hear properly. If that is what they want of course."
"What else it doctor?" Jeremy asked them.
"Well, they will also be undergoing burn treatment. Basically the nurses will peal back the damaged derma cells before replacing it with petroleum mesh. It's to help the lower layers of the dermas to heal properly." They told them.
"Is that painful?" Scarlett asked as they nodded.
"Sadly yes it is, but it prevents infection within the damaged cells from forming and spreading. Turning into necrofasciatus. It is a flesh eating bacteria and is deadly." They told them. "Also they will need some physio on their movement, but they should make a full recovery. It is a long road but they will have all of the help they need to get there."
"Thank you doctor." Jeremy smiled at them.
"Please wait an hour or so before you go back to see them." They informed them as the three nodded. Sitting down in the chairs provided.
"I need to call my mum." Jeremy said as he got his phone out of his pocket.
"What about everyone else?" Scarlett asked.
"Just let me tell my mum everything and then we can put it on the group chat." Jeremy said as Scar nodded in agreement.
"I can't believe it." Lizzie mumbled as Scar sat beside her.
"I know." Scarlett said as she held Lizzie's hand.
"They came back to us." Lizzie smiled tearily as she looked at Scar. "They came back."
"Come here." Scarlett opened her arms before Lizzie sobbed into them.
"I thought I lost them." Lizzie said as Scar just held her. "I really did. I don't know what I would do if that happened."
"Well you won't have to Lizzie. They are still alive. Your best friend is still alive." Scarlett told her as she nodded. "So don't dwell on the what ifs. Just dwell on the future. They're going to need us all more than ever. So please just enjoy the moment of them being here." Lizzie nodded as Jeremy sat the other side of Lizzie.
"I've told everyone. I also told them not to come out yet because I don't want to overwhelm them." Jeremy said as the two girls agreed. "Thank you Lizzie."
"Why?" She asked him confused.
"Even in spite of your feelings for them, you pushed them aside just so they could be happy and find themselves again." He told her sincerely.
"I would rather have them in my life just as a friend than not at all." Lizzie told him. The three hugged as they waited patiently for Y/N to be finished with their first course of treatment. Screaming as the nurses peal away the damaged cells.
It is going to be a long and painful road to recovery. But they will make it with their friends and family by there side.
