When You Are Old
By: William Butler Yeats

This poem highlights unrequited love between the speaker who is directly talking to his lover, and instructs her to open a book which contains the poems. It was an unrequited love so in the end of the poem he was emphasizing how those love for her faded.

The first stanza of the poem, is all about instructing her that when she was old she should take the book and slowly read it. In that way it can remind her of her beauty when she was young. Specifically those soft looks on her eyes.

The second stanza was to remind the woman that a lot of people had loved her, specially when she was young and had her grace. But it also points out that those people does not really love her, only her physical looks. The speaker was also telling her that he loved her even when her beauty fades as she get older. It shows that the speaker was different from others that only loved her because of her fame and beauty. He adored her soul and loved who she was on the inside.

The third and last stanza, emphasizes that it was an unrequited love. The speaker wanted the woman to regret when she was older, that she lost the only one who would love her when her beauty faded. He wanted the woman to picture herself to be an old woman, hoping that she would change her mind and give him a chance. He was hoping that she will return the love to a man who love the beauty of her soul and not her physical beauty.
