"Y/N, are you listening?"

You look up for a moment from your desk. "I'm trying to focus on my job, Deborah." You reply, narrowing your eyes.

Deborah huffed. "Y/N, I was telling you about how my son caught his first pokemon!" She said, crossing her arms.

"I'm trying to focus on my job, Deborah." You repeat, before turning your gaze back to the computer screen. "I don't have time to listen to your family drama or whatever."

"Yeah, well, at least I have a family, Y/N." Deborah responded angrily. She was known for her short temper.

Another coworker looked over. "Deborah cut it out."

You sat there, stunned. Nobody ever brought that up. Not even Deborah. She must really be mad, you thought. "I'm leaving early," you said as you rose to your feet, and gathered your things.

"Y/N, I'm sorry, I-" Deborah stammered, her face bright red in embarrassment. "I didn't me-"

You shoot her a glare, before storming out. "I don't give a shit," you growl as you pass her. The commute home was quiet, giving you time to calm down.

Once you enter your apartment, you see the pile of letters stuffed through the mail slot. "Bills, junk, more junk..." one particular letter catches your eye. It's from your former sister-in-law. You ponder if you should bother opening it. You don't want any reminders of the past, so you crumble it up and toss it into the recycle with the rest of the junk.

After changing out of your business attire, you sit on the couch and turn on the tv, flipping through channels. Your mind begins to wander, to that night when everything went wrong. When your life was ruined.

It all happened a year ago. Your wife was in labor. You were getting the last of the things she needed into the car, and her Sylveon was keeping an eye on her while you did so. Your Jolteon accompanied you, trying to help. Just as you brought the last few items down the stairs, you saw an out-of-control Steelix on a rampage heading straight for the car. Your wife and her Sylveon were in the car. Before you could do anything, the Steelix destroyed the car with heavy slam. Killing your wife, her Sylveon, and your unborn child. Right before your eyes. You watched helplessly as it continued off on the rampage. "ANNALISE!" you cried out, falling to your knees at the sight of your beloved wife slaughtered brutally before you.

In the following months, you had begun to isolate yourself. You tried to get rid of anything and everything that reminded you of your deceased wife. You got a new job at an office that managed taxes for wealthy people. Your Jolteon hadn't left his pokeball since the incident unless it was to eat. About three weeks ago, you moved to your current apartment. You still hadn't finished unpacking.

DING DONG!

You look over at the door. "WHO IS IT?" You holler, standing up. You never got visitors, and you'd already paid this month's rent, so it wasn't your landlord, right?

"DELIVERY FOR Y/N!" the person yells.

You head to the door and open it, and sign for the package. You didn't recall ordering anything, but the package had your name and address on it. After bringing it inside and setting it on the dining room table, you let out a pained grunt. It was pretty heavy, and not easy on your back. "What the fuck is in here?" You muttered, grabbing a box-cutter.

When you removed the styrofoam and bubblewrap, you found an incubator with a eevee egg inside, as well as a note.

You quickly read the note.

Dear Y/N,

I'm Professor Sycamore. Your late wife Annalise's employer. I was cleaning out her office when I stumbled upon this. I assume it was her Sylveon's egg. I'm surprised it hasn't hatched yet, but I figured you'd prefer if I sent it to you. I'm sorry for your loss, but if this eevee hatches, I pray it brings some joy into your life.
