"Welcome one, welcome all, to the annual Lindsey Stirling Preschool Talent Show!"

Those were the words that started the night off. The audience was packed with adults - proud parents, of course - plus grumbling older siblings who wanted to do nothing but go home. But it was backstage where our story begins, for it is there where we meet the preschoolers themselves. Several groups of them were playing with their fingers or anxiously biting their nails, trying to distract themselves. A few groups of boys were laughing light-heartedly.

And one of those groups of boys ... well, those are the five boys whose story we're following.

The voice of the announcer echoed through backstage.

"As we all know, Lindsey Stirling Preschool holds its talent show as a special performance for the children every year so as to encourage them to be creative and show off their skills. Why, perhaps some of them may even find a love of the stage this very day! That rush of adrenaline and energy ... but one of the most important aspects of the talent show is in the preparation process, through which the children bond and make friends."

The group of the five boys were backstage, discussing what they were doing.

"We hold up the signs," the boy called Liam said, pointing at the signs on the floor in front of them. "Miss Hocking said the people watching can read our names then."

"But they're strangers," the boy called Niall whined. "Strangers shouldn't know our names."

"They're nice strangers, though," the boy called Zayn said. "Nice strangers are nice."

"Duh," Louis scoffed.

"If my big sister heard you say that, she'd say, 'Dat sass dough!'" Harry said.

"What's sass?" Liam asked.

"What's dough?" Louis asked.

Harry shrugged, then got out a crayon and started drawing a cat on the back of his sign.

"We hold up the signs," Niall said, "and then we start singing Twinkle Twinkle, right?"

"Yeah," Liam said.

"But I wanted to sing -" Zayn began.

"Hey!" Niall yelled. "That cat looks nothing like me, Harreh!"

The other three looked over Harry's shoulder when they realised he had drawn an arrow pointing to the cat and written 'Nail'.

"That's not even how you spell my name," Niall pouted.

"It has your nose, see?" Harry said. "And those are your eyes."

"They could be Louis' eyes," Niall huffed.

"No, yours are brighter," Louis pointed out.

Niall ignored him and said to Harry, "They could also be your eyes."
