Paper Jam
"Bye guys!" I yelled as I ran out of the house. There was no 'good luck Kherrington' or 'have a great day' in return. But in their defense, they were yelling so loudly at each other that I couldn't even hear myself think. Closing the door to my shiny blue Toyota Highlander I put the key in the ignition, turned on some tunes, and pulled out of the driveway.
We've been on the run
Driving in the sun
Looking out for number one
California here we come
Right back where we started from
I picked up my cell phone as it rang my favorite song. "Hello?"
"Good Luck Kerri!" my best friend Susie shouted in my ear. I grimaced at the high decibel level.
"Thanks Suse," I put the visor thing down to block the sunlight from my view. And when that didn't help at all, I slid on my sunglasses.
"You know, I'm totally bummed that you're going to be spending the whole summer interning. Like, who does that?" At first, Susie was psyched with me when I found out that I was accepted to do a summer internship at Electric magazine, now she's - in her words- totally bummed.
"It looks good on college apps though," I defended myself. My senior year starts in three months! I need to do as much stuff as I can to put on my apps.
"College, college, college. Bleh. Why don't we talk about how you're not going to get to tan on the beach, flirt with shirtless guys, and spend hours at the mall with your best friend Suse? How about that?" The car in front of me stopped so I eased my foot on the brake pedal.
"Susie, there will be plenty of time to tan and stare at hot guys. We have all summer."
"I'd like to see the tan that you'd get from working under fluorescent lights all day," she fired back.
"It will be gorgeous!" My grand French Governess accent was improving.
"If you say so," she trailed off. I chuckled and rolled my eyes. "I just called to wish you good luck on your first day as a big girl! I have to get back to watching this amazing beach volleyball game. Let me tell ya, it's a pretty amazing sight."
"Suse it's 8 in the morning!" I reprimanded her for her early start at boy watching.
