You read the parchment that Faith had wrote the address on. The moonlight casted over the empty yard. You scrunched your face at the building it brought you to. This is the dueling hall. You thought. You knocked on the door. "Password." A voice abruptly spoke. Their eyes peered through the peephole. You read the paper. "Uh Yum Juice." You spoke. The peep hole shut, you heard numerous locks click before the door opened. "Welcome to Avery's Academy beginning of year bash!" The door keeper stated pointing around the room. You were shocked at how big the building actually was. Musketeers and witchdoctors were on the right side, seeing who could shoot a moving target better. On the left, a group of Buccaneers wrestled, the swashbucklers laughing and placing bets on their friends.
"Alright, the dueling bracket will now begin, find your partners. These are duo battles." Kai yelled. He and Faith sat at a judges table. You noticed Josh talking to them. you made your way over. "Oh Serena! So glad you came. Have you chosen a partner yet?" Faith asked. "Not yet, not really sure I feel like dueling." You joked awkwardly rubbing your arm. "Ah Nonsense! Everyplace thrives off of duels," Kai spoke up. "I'll be your partner, I'm pretty well matched myself." Josh spoke turning to you. You looked at faith and she gave you a thumbs up. "Sure." You spoke. Josh smiled, "I'll go get my gear and blade." He stated walking towards a room. You reaching in your satchel, putting on your cloak, hiding daggers throughout. You also placed some thorn vine seeds into a pocket. "Have you been able to find a proper weapon yet?" Kai asked. "Not really, I've only been here on the island a few days now." You spoke. Kai got up going to his bag. He pulled out a pair of long knives that had a skull engraved in each, the hilts sparkles gold. "Here, I've got a second set like these. The finest of Monquista." He gleamed, extending the knives. About a foot long, you held them. Flexing them around, "it's just like an extension of the arm." You laughed smiling. "Isn't it amazing." Kai gleamed proudly.
A duo walked over, signing their name to the list. You looked at the two. One guy, stood, his mask covering his face. He wore a small cowboy hat, tinted glasses shading his eyes. A large rifle strapped to his back. Two pistols holstered to his sides. He glanced up, tilting his hat to you. He spun on his heel his partner following as they acknowledged their side of the duel room. Their partner, he was a bit shorter than the other guy. They wore their long black hair in a half bun. Their freckles spotted along their cheeks. They wore a headband adorned in moonstone and runes. They held a staff in their arms. The hieroglyphs reflected in the dim lighting. the staff was level with their shoulders, a scarab sat in the middle of gold headpiece of the staff. "That's Lib Felix," josh whispered. "He's been gone for ages on a research project with some other students. They've been in Kroktopia for 2 months, only got back yesterday." He continued.
You and josh took you stances as the countdown began. "5..4..3..2.1" the flag raised. Felix slammed their staff, a shot of lightning flew towards you. Josh threw his blade, intercepting the lighting sending it flying across the room. "Thanks!!" You shouted. He nodded, charging towards the musket. You flipped forward, landing in a tuck and roll, slashing the ammo off the partners chest. He widened his eyes, flipping back shooting two shots from his dual pistols. You spun, dodging the shots. "I thought cowboys never miss." Josh mocked throwing his sword toward the army of scarabs Felix had summoned. "Shut it Kelly." The musket shouted, firing at Josh's hand knocking the blade away. "Oh Play Nice!" Josh mocked him. You threw the thorn vines seeds on the ground. the vines began to grow, the large sharp thorns poked from the beautiful red rose buds. The vines rapidly crept towards the musket. The vines wrapping around his feet, encasing his arms down, squeezing him. "Ahhh! FELIX!" He yelled struggling in the vines. His partner jerked his head, interrupting his spell. Felix mumbled a curse, sending a flaming sword hurdling towards you and his friend. Josh shoved you out of the way. The fire glazing his trench coat. Felix ran to the musket, pulling the broiled vines off of him. Josh nodded at you, he threw his blade, launching it into the air. You started to sprint repelling off the judges table, and landing a foot on the blade helping you leap forward. You landed in the middle of the two partners knocking them to the ground. You landed with one knee down, one hand bracing the ground the other balancing in the air. The two opponents groaned, groggily standing. Kai ran to the center of the duel circle grabbing both you and Josh's arms holding them in the air. "Winners! ROUND ONE." The crowd cheered. You glanced over, offering your hand. "Good match man." You spoke extending your hand. The musket glanced at you, removing his glove shaking your hand. He slid his face covering off, and smiled. "I'm Valkoor Ryan, but you can just call me Ryan." He spoke. "I'm Serena, I don't have a nickname yet." You spoke smiling. Josh walked over slapping. Ryan on the back. "Great duel mate, don't worry you'll get me next week." Josh joked. Ryan rolled his eyes. "That was a good match guys." Felix spoke walking over. You shook hands introducing yourself. "Hey is anyone going on the skull cave field trip tomorrow?" Felix asked packing their bag. "I actually was planning on it." Josh spoke up. "I'd like to go." You stated putting your knives back in their holsters. "I think we all would rather ditch school and go explore a cave filled with treasure." Kai joked. Faith laughed. "But it's now considered off limits due to Avery's restrictions." Felix replied. "Maybe we just go on our own field trip, a private study session." Ryan smirked."sounds good to me!" Kai stated fist bumping his friend. "I'm in." Faith gleamed. "Me too." You spoke. "Awesome, meet by the lookout post in the jungle, the 6 of us going together is better than alone." Felix stated. "I'll see y'all there." You spoke before leaving the party and going back to your dorm.
