"Guys! Come on!" Salem whined, tugging on her brother's hand as they trudged up the hill.
Chan smiled lovingly as he said, "Give us a minute, Sal. This hill is steep."
"You're just slow, agapi mou." Salem teased, delighting in the exasperated look her lover gave her.
Felix smiled softly, watching the interaction. He looked over and noticed Paradise sharing his expression. The two of them had always been fond of their best friend's relationship.
Astraea would have joined them, but she was busy tending to Cassiopeia, one of the Thornletter twins, who had gotten into an accident in the river.
"If you guys are so slow at this, then we're never going to find Koreth!" Salem taunted.
Felix shook his head fondly, his wings shaking slightly with him. The whole reason the Sun Searchers had even been created was for Salem. Chan had called it the Sun Searchers because she was his sun, and Koreth was hers.
It had always been Salem's dream to find Koreth and find their parents. Chan, hopelessly in love with her, had quickly created the crew as a gift to her.
"We'll find Koreth, Salem. I promise." Chan said, completely serious.
Salem grinned at him, still tugging Hyunjin up the hill.
"Why are we going up here again?" Paradise asked, voicing what Felix had been wondering the entire time. The faerie set her elbow on Felix's shoulder and he winced as she hit the sensitive joint where his wings connected to his back. She looked apologetic and whispered, "Sorry, Felix."
Salem giggled. "A sunset picnic! This is the best spot to watch the sunset! It's my favorite place."
When they reached the top, Felix's breath was blown away. The view from the top of the hill was beautiful. The sky was streaked with warm colors as the sun disappeared below the horizon, and Felix was in awe of the beauty.
"See? It's so pretty up here." Salem said softly.
Chan smiled. "Not as pretty as you."
Salem blushed as if Chan didn't deliver that line any chance he got.
"Shut up, you sap."
They talked and laughed as they set out the blanket and food, but just as they finished, a shout was heard.
"They're over here!"
A trio of humans came up to the top of the hill. A wave of fear washed over the group and they leaped up, getting ready to run. Humans were dangerous. Getting caught by humans meant death.
"A fairy!" One shouted.
"Vampire!" Another screamed.
Felix grabbed Hyunjin's and Paradise's hands while Chan grabbed Salem and they took off running, hearing the humans give chase.
"Get them!" The humans shouted, and the five of them ran desperately to escape.
As they were running, Felix yelped as an arrow nicked his left wing. He could feel wetness on his scales and he didn't even have to look to know he was bleeding.
Pretty soon, they ended up at the bottom of the hill and were caught at the rivershore below. There was no way to cross and no way to get away.
They were cornered.
"You'll fetch us a pretty price. Especially the hybrid. Those wings are worth a fortune." One of the humans sneered, talking about Felix as if he were a prized horse or something.
