He was on his knees on the edge of the rooftop. His hands were bound. He was staring down, avoiding looking up. The glow of the flames was reflected on his face. I stepped behind him, grabbed a fist full of his hair, and jerked his back.
"Watch your world burn. All you know is gone." I chuckled.
The reflection of the flames mixed with his fear was beautiful. "You've lost everything and everyone." I sneered.
"Why?" he whimpered out breathlessly.
I knelt next to him and looked him right in the face. Mere inches from our faces touching. "Because everyone in this town hated me. I knew no kindness. How can I learn to be kind when I never learned what it was? Having the reputation of the bastard child who is shunned and can never do anything right. Your family was the worst."
"Had you explained, I could have helped..." he glanced at me before looking back at the flames consuming the city. The heat and smoke rising. Screams echo from below.
"Well, "Hero," it wouldn't have made a difference," I said between gritted teeth. "Heros don't help villains. You destroy them if given the chance. Only way we can win is to get rid of the heroes."
I stood up and placed one hand on his shoulder, and I took a deep breath, admiring my work. "That's what I am doing. Ensuring my happiness."
Unsheathing my dagger from its garter, I press the blade up against his throat.
He took in a sharp breath once he felt the metal hit his skin. "I could have made you a hero. I could have been your family," he pleaded.
"Shut up!" I grabbed his head once again, refusing to let him move. I leaned down and spoke into his ear, "I don't want to be a hero. This is far more fun." I smiled wickedly.
"Farewell...half-brother."
I ran the blade swiftly across his throat. The warm, sticky red liquid quickly ran down his chest and pooled down on the ground. His body slowly went limp as I was holding his head. I put my boot against his back and pushed him off the side of the building into the flames.
"This is my happy ending."
