Back in The Past

Anastasia POV

After a lot of struggle, Ellie and I finally were able to drag Joel into a nearby house I found while Ellie stayed with him. We put Joel into the basement that was there and set ourselves, far away from any windows or doors that led outside to keep him and us safe.  

Ellie sat next to Joel trying to get him to drink some water but it was no use, he was too weak at this moment. The look on Ellie's face destroyed me, so I decided to go up and sit next to her.

"He won't eat or drink anything, he needs to," Ellie says while refusing to look up at me, keeping her eyes on Joel. I see a tear roll down the side of her face before she quickly wipes it away and sniffles slightly. I sighed, seeing Ellie like this was so new to me and although I'm not the best at comforting people, I have to try for her, she was there for me with my mum, and as much as I would never tell her this, After spending so much time with this girl I've come to care for her, so now it's my time to be there with her in her moments of struggle.

"Hey I mean, at least you weren't the one stabbing someone this time," I say trying my best to get a laugh at the girl and it surprisingly seemed to work as she finally looked back at me, jaw dropped a bit before letting out a small laugh and smile.

Flashback

"And Finally Anastasia and Ellie, Now everyone head off with your partners and be careful with the final part of this assignment." Our teacher says. I sigh and get up looking around for Ellie. I don't have a problem with the girl but I'm pretty sure, actually, I know she has a problem with me. I can tell by the look she has on her face as I get closer to her.

The assignment is to write a step-by-step essay on how to kill different kinds of infected and then a demonstration on how to do a silent kill. I stood on the other side of Ellie's table as the other girl eyed me up and down.

"Okay so, I say we split up the work on the essay, then the demonstration part is easy you will be the infected and I'll come up behind you while you explain what is happening. Got it?" Ellie said to take the lead but I am not having it. 

"We're supposed to do the assignment together, that's like the whole point. So we'll meet up at the library in about an hour and get started. Got it?" I say, walking away before Ellie can protest me. This obviously pissed the other girl off because I can hear her sigh as I walk away.

I walked into the library, which seems considerably big considering the fact that were in the middle of a worldwide pandemic and the last thing you would think would be on people's minds were books, but I start looking around for anything that could help us. As I do so I spot Ellie sitting at a desk in the corner of the room, so I walk up to her, pulling up a chair, and sitting down next to her.

"I'm not gonna lie I'm surprised you came," I say to the girl who still hasn't looked up at me, she just continues writing in her book.

"I had nothing better to do," Ellie says, then she finally looks up at me. "I started researching the runners which was easy, here." She says as she hands me the book showing me what she has written.

"Okay yeah, this is actually pretty good but I would add in how they tend to attack people in hordes," I advise the girl. 

"Yeah, but the thing is you're wrong." Ellie tilts her head at me.

"Well were in a library for a reason lets go have a look." I say getting up and holding out my hand to help the other girl up, she looks at my hand then looks me up and down and gets up by herself. I pull back my hand and sigh in annoyance. 

"Why do you hate me so much? I've literally done nothing to you." I say to her as we walk towards the books but stop at the end, she doesn't stop walking at first so I pull her by her hand which makes her face me before she pulls her hand away. 

"Why does it bother you so much? Not everyone has to like you. Hearing that must be hard for you considering you spend so much time sucking up to people." Hearing Ellie say this, I'm not going to lie it kind of struck a nerve mostly because she's right.

"Whatever," I say walking away from the girl. She knows she won as well, I can tell by the small laugh she lets out before she starts following me.

"Here this book looks good," Ellie says while opening it and she tries to show me the contents of the book but drops it on the ground. We both bend down to pick up the book and as we do we both look up at each other. We pause for a moment. My breathing picks up slightly as I look at the other girl up and down pausing at her lips for a moment too long before quickly standing up and rubbing my hands on my jeans as they've suddenly gotten slightly sweat

We walked back to our spot and just continued writing in silence. I don't know what just happened but I don't want to think about it anymore, I just need to get through this.

"Okay I've finished the rat king part, once you're done with the shamblers we should move on to the demonstration," Ellie says turning her head toward me but I refuse to look back.

"Yep, I'm just about done," I say finishing off the final detail. "We can use my room for the assignment, my roommate is out with her boyfriend right now so it will be empty."

We start walking towards my room stopping off in the classroom first to pick up the camera we need to use. There's one camera that is shared around the class due to the limit on them for obvious reasons. We eventually make it to my room and set everything up.

"Okay so while you're explaining how to do a stealth kill I demonstrate it by coming up behind you like this," Ellie says while wrapping her arm around me and slightly pulling my face back, and carefully placing the knife near my neck but being extremely careful not to touch it anywhere near my neck. I can't help but laugh a bit when she does this as she has to go up on her tiptoes a bit to be able to reach my face. "Why are you laughing?" the shorter girl asks.

"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to." I stay still laughing slightly, not being able to hold it back.

"Are you laughing 'cause I'm short?" Ellie yells with this shocked look on her face which makes me laugh even more. "I can't believe you." I can tell by the slight smile on her face when I look over at her that she's joking.

It's nice, this moment. I've never seen Ellie like this. I was expecting to be annoyed the entire time. Just as we were starting to finally get along my roommate walks through the door. Not expecting it shocks us both and as I go to move away, somehow Ellie's knife ends up in my shoulder. 

"what the fuck!" I yell.

End of flashback

"Hey, that was your own fault!" Ellie turns to me.

"Hmm... Agree to disagree, if you would have just used the fake knife as I told you to I would never have this" I pull down the side of my shirt, revealing a small scar as the knife didn't go to deep. "But no, it had to 'look realistic' didn't it?"

"I stand by it," Ellie says turning around and giggling slightly.
