Reluctance

I once thought that life was supposed to be easy, but then I realize that around every victory will be another obstacle, I just finished my midterms for my freshmen year. I thought I was riding cloud nine because I studied my ass off for those exams and I helped my friends. Friends that I initially had no idea how to make. I wanted to be able to make it through high school under everybody's radar. Especially with my 'Gift'. However, they broke down the walls that I built so high and thick. I loved them with all my heart and probably name my children after them. Maybe.

My mom called a family meeting upon my arrival home. Everyone was in attendance. "Start packing your things up. By the end of Cassie's school year we will be moving closer to Nana's home." Wait, hold what did she just say. Maybe I'm imagining it. I asked her to repeat herself and I wasn't imagining it at all. "So, I finally make friends and now we have to move. What kind of bullshit is that?" I asked irritated. "Well, I'm glad that you've finally made friends babes but this will be good for us. Some fresh air will be good for you." My birth giver says like it wasn't a problem at all. "This isn't fair ma. She's right, we've finally had friends this year because this place is the longest we've stayed at due to your relocation we have had to keep up with." My brother Donny, said. Finally, someone who understands. "Does this mean I can look for my own place because I'm not moving closer to that hag," my older brother Lucas asked. My dad looks overjoyed when Lucas said that. "Yes, if that is what you wish. After all you are 20. You'll be 21 this year. So, if you have money for a security deposit for an apartment." Lucas looked confused. "I have to have money for a security deposit?" Dad looked defeated, "Yes son, you do." Lucas just shrugged and said that his friend was looking for a roommate. Dad accepted that and offered to help him move his stuff over.

Meanwhile, Donny and I felt like we were always the ones in the middle. Even though I'm the youngest. we both finally made friends and we were happy, why would she do this to us? We both looked at each other from across the room. We just felt like we were never heard. "Why do we have to move? Mama we are finally happy here. It's not fair." I said miserably. "Life is not fair buttercup, God only said it would be worth it." She said as she starts looking up prices for moving trucks. I roll my eyes, don't get me wrong, I see nothing wrong when people mention religion but mom sayings get old when you've heard them all your life. "Well when do we have to start packing?" "As soon as possible, The more we have packed, the more ready we will be to leave on our last day here." Dad said excitedly. "It's a new adventure and the place your mom and I have picked out is gorgeous. Everyone will have their own room and we will have a guest room." My Nana lives 4 hours from where we currently live. It would be different is she just lived 45 minutes from here, but no she lives in the fricking boonies. What is it with old people in small country towns that probably have to cell service.

Mom's job is a really good paying job. I mean, we never really had a struggle in life after she was offered the job when I was 4 years old. She works for the State prison system. Anytime there seems to be an issue at another prison, she either goes to it by herself if it is something small that would only take her a week or so to fix. Or we would have to move there was something major coming into play. It's a struggle to make friends when you only hang around for a couple of months then up and leave. That's why Donny and I don't make friends. We'll only be disappointed later. No attachments we used to say. Dad's job is great. He is a customer service representative for his job. So, he doesn't have to work inside a building and he can even wear pajamas all day if he wished. Must be great to work from home. "You guys do realize that Donny has a job, right?" I remind the adults. "Well he can always find another one, there are plenty of places that need employees in the town that your nana lives in." Donny just shakes his head at me, he walks over and sits down next to me. "Don't worry about it, I was about to quit anyway." He whispered to me. "Well throughout the next couple of months you guys pack thing you aren't going to need and maybe this weekend we can see the new house," Mom said.

Donny and I looked at each other, we hope our friends will be understanding when we tell them.
