The Root

Every hundredth year is the anniversary of my curse, that curse that prevents me from being free. I get a week every one hundred years, just to roam around and find the one that will break my curse. The one person to break  the curse will be the first person to love me, a true loves kiss is all I need to be set free.

My roots slowly shrink and turn into toes, toes attached to dark muddy feet, legs forming as the oak wood split apart. The wood split faster, splitting every part of my body into jagged limbs that smoothen out into tanned skin. Bark like clothing covering all that was needed to cover. Dark green leaves changed into shoulder lengthed hair. Dark eyes forming under thick long brows.

"Wow," I whisper as i flex my long, delicate fingers. Stretching out my newly obtained body parts. I hadn't felt like this for so long. It's strange being human again for the first time in a long time.

I looked around the forest I had been reborn in, seeking to find something different to tell me where I was, but I was completely alone. Nothing for a long while. I do not know which direction to begin going, but i have limited time to find humans. To find the one that will save me and break this curse.

I start roaming towards where I hope to find humans, each foot placed after the other. These human body pieces returned to me after a century. It feels so odd, but I remember exactly how to use them.

The odd crunch of each movement makes me feel at ease as it quietens slowly, limbs settling in to place.
The thick smell of grass along the air got heavier the closer i got to the sound of cars against a gravel road.

People, I'm starting to see some walking past. They haven't noticed me yet but it won't be long. I am a noticeable tree, after all.
Though even as I walk down the foot path, nobody even looks my way. If they do, it is just a small smile with a simple "morning" falling off their lips.

Why haven't they noticed what I am yet?.. Oh.
That's because i look like one of them. I don't look like my true self anymore, a tree.

Everyone sees me as another human. Walking around and wondering what the point of all this is. That is all they see when they look at me. A normal human.
How do normal humans act?

I need to find a place to stay, some money, food, all of it. I can't find someone if im homeless and poor. Without proper clothes, all i am wearing right now is these disgusting pieces of fabric that don't even do anything for me.

I roamed around freely, looking for things i could use to help me get along in the human world for a bit. Walking and looking through windows to see if there are any jobs available or anything being given away for free in this terrible city. There's no signs of any available items, places, or jobs. I might just have to try to find an abandoned building to stay at for now. Just somewhere to live for a bit.

I can't find any place yet, I'm just hoping I'll run into something that can help. I need a job before tomorrow but that will be difficult to do. I have seven days at most to find someone to break my curse, but here i am failing to find an available job.

If only i could get through this faster, it is difficult in a city i have never seen before. The last time i was human, none of this stuff existed. I didn't  even get to watch it change this time from where my roots were planted.
