Taehyung was a nice boy in school. He was friends with everyone. He helped everyone who needed it and did everything his teachers ever asked of him. He was the class representative and was one of the most known people in school. He wasn’t popular for his looks, but because of how nice he was.
Unfortunately for him, he didn’t realize how many people were only using him. His inability to notice made it hard for him to understand who his real friends were.
All through high school and well into his career afterward, despite his deadly power, people always flocked to him. He thought this meant everyone liked him and that he had friends. Until he found out it was the opposite. He knew people were talking about him behind his back, that much was obvious, but finding out that the people he thought he was close to were just using him cut deep.
One day during his break from work, he overheard some of his coworkers talking about him. Each of them talking about how they’re using him to get out of working harder. Two of his coworkers were his peers from high school and they talked about how they used to use him just to get good grades. They even admitted to taking this job because they found out Taehyung would be working there and they could barely lift a finger to work if they offloaded it over to him.
Taehyung suddenly felt sick to his stomach hearing this and decided to leave work early that day. On his walk back home, he started wondering who else in his life felt this way about him. He grew more anxious with each step closer to home worrying if his own family felt a similar way or even the friend he made who lived next door to them, Kyung. When Taehyung’s family relocated from Daegu to Seoul, Kyung was his first friend. They were practically childhood friends. So there was no way Kyung felt the same way his coworkers did, right? And his family still loved him, too, right?
Taehyung paused in the doorway of his family’s house to find three suitcases by the door, fully packed. Next to them were two small children’s suitcases stuffed full on the floor. He could hear rummaging coming from the direction of his parents' room as he shut the door quietly and stepped inside. A fourth suitcase rolled out of the room with his dad holding it and his mom following after him.
“Going somewhere?” he asked. His chest felt tight as he watched the shock on his parent’s faces grow when they saw him. Why were they so shocked to see him? Why did they seem like they were in a hurry? What was going on?
“Oh, Tae honey, you’re home,” his mom said with a smile. “Um, sorry for the extremely short notice, but we’re, uh, moving out.”
“Moving out? Why? And on such short notice?”
Something strange started to bubble in Taehyung’s stomach and it almost made him feel like he would throw up. He wasn’t sure what he was feeling at the moment. Was it anger? Confusion? He didn’t know, but it felt bad.
“Your grandmother is sick and we have to go take care of her. And since your siblings are already there, we only needed to take just a few more things for them.”
“Grandma is sick so you’re moving out?”
Something about that didn’t sound right to him. Something was off. She was fine yesterday when he spoke to her on the phone. There was no way she suddenly fell so ill that they’d have to leave so fast. And to move out just like that instead of packing for a month to stay with her seemed strange to him. If it were the truth, they wouldn’t even be in such a hurry either.
