at the end of lunch, melanie separated from the popular group and went over to maya and anna.
"hey guys! i got invited to a sleepover at miranda's house tonight! you two should totally come!" mel jumped up and down.
"oh em gee! we would but we have a sleepover too tonight." anna said, twirling her hair around her finger.
"but look what we got!" maya said, holding up a cigarette. melanie looked at them confused. "you've never smoked before?" she asked.
"no?" "no." the two girls said when brandt and dustin came running past them shouting, "UGIS!"
"UGIS!"
becca walked by, a smug look on her face. "you guys, stop! this is like, really mean. just tell her!"
"tell her what becca?" mel furrowed her eyebrows at brandt, who just encouraged melanie to laugh. she didn't. "U-G-I-S biyatch!" dustin yelled.
"UGIS!"
both brandt and dustin ran up and down the hall, some kids rolling their eyes.
"wait, what?" maya said, concerned. anna looked confused, looking at mel.
but melanie realised that this whole thing was just a joke. she relaxed her eyebrows in realisation. they were doing this to maya for entertainment.
"oh honey, don't you know? It means ugliest girl in school." as becca giggled, brandt and dustin ran past them yelling "UGIS" again.
"they're so mean, and they said they don't know why you're wearing a bra anna, cuz there's nothing to go in it. also, melanie, they think you should stop hanging out with these losers. i'm like, so sorry."
mel looked at maya and saw her eyes filling with tears. the boys ran past yet again "go fuck yourselves!" the new girl shouted, sticking her middle finger up.
becca, maya, and anna all looked at her almost shocked she was sticking up for her friend.
"it's cool. yeah, yeah. no, that's really funny" maya said, sucking in her tears. "thanks for telling me becca."
melanie rolled her eyes. she thought these kids were gonna be nice.
the middle schoolers were standing in the school front lawn, melanie heard that maya was going to bitch out brandt and dustin, as she wasn't in their last class.
