Y/N POV
"Come on, Y/N! Let's go check out the backpacks and then the books," Betty called out to me. I just nodded as she dragged me to where the backpacks were. We both looked at what they had, wondering if there'd be one we'd want for the upcoming school year.

"This one looks nice," she said pointing at a two pocket purple backpack.

"That one is definitely your style," I said then picked up a bag, "and this one seems like my style."

"So true," she added, "let's go look for new books!"

We held onto the backpacks we chose and ran over to the books. We looked at all of them, trying to find something new. I picked up one to look at and saw it was a newly printed copy, "hey Betty! This novel is a new print!"

She looked at the book in my hand and smiled widely, "that's Oliver Twist! I love that book!"

"Do you know if there's any used books here? They're normally cheaper."

"I think over there," she said pointing to a section. We walked over and she was right.

I grabbed one of my favorite books from class, "hey look they have Moby Dick!"

"Oh really," she said and walked over to me as we flipped through the book. She ended up pointing out that a word was underlined, "hey the word 'eskimo' is underlined. That's kind of random."

"I wonder why they underlined it. It's one of those things that make you curious but could be one of those things where curiosity killed that cat but satisfaction didn't bring it back."

"Honestly, who knows. Do you think you'll get it?"

"Yeah, and probably these ones too," I said while picking up The Great Gatsby and Animal Farm.

"Looks like we both might have some new reading material for the school year," she said with a smile, grabbing Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, and Little Women.

"Oh we should read this together. Well at the same time," I said picking up 1984.

"Isn't that supposed to be one of the books that's required in high school," she asked.

"I think so. Either way it doesn't hurt to read it," I told her.

"That's definitely true," she replied as I grabbed a copy for her and myself.

"Do you think we're done looking?"

"Well at this store, I would say so. We should go to the drugstore for some pens and pencils though. The school year starts in a week and we don't even have those," she laughed. I laughed in response and we went to the cashier. We paid for our bags and books and then went to our bikes. We put our books in our new backpacks then rode off to the drugstore. Once we got there we went to the office supplies. We grabbed a small pack of pens and pencils.

"A six pack of pencils and four pack of pens? I'm not fully sure if that'll be enough but we'll figure it out when we need to," Betty said.

"It'll be enough until Christmas," I told her, "do you think we should grab any of those, y'know?"

"It would be safe to but I'm sure our mom's are able to 'supply' them," she said with a goofy smile.

"Probably," I replied with a smile then looked down at my watch, "we should make our way back to our homes. It's close to the street lights coming on."

She nodded and we bought the stuff, split them, and then biked our ways back home. Once home, I ate dinner with my parents then took a shower and went to bed. The rest of the days went by quickly and the school year started.

Classes went by and so did the school year. We finally made our way to the start of May. Not too long after, May 20th, my birthday, popped up. I had a small party, more so just a gathering with my parents and Betty's family. I ended up choosing the meal to be my favorite dish, spaghetti with lots of oregano, instead of going out somewhere. Our mom's ended up making the meal for us. They added salad and breadsticks for sides. We had a nice dinner. Betty and I had a sleepover, even though it was a school night. We ate popcorn, played rom-coms, jumped around and danced to Madonna, Young MC, and Queen. We stayed up until 2 in the morning and went to school the next day, completely exhausted. We ended up actually being super exhausted for the next few days and then the weekend came around.

I tried calling Betty's house to see if we could hang out any time during the weekend and she never came to the phone, neither did her parents. Late Sunday, we got a call and I ran to the phone but my mom picked up first. I stood next to her while listening.

"Wait, wait. Dotty, I can't understand you," my mom said. All I could hear was sobbing from the other end of the phone and got super worried.

"Wait... what," my mom said softly.

"What happened," I whispered to her. She shooed me off and continued talking.

"Betty went missing," I could hear Mrs. Ripsom say. I looked in shock at the table nearby. Not expecting to hear anything like that.

"I'm so sorry... I don't know how to help," my mom said into the phone.

"I'm not sure how you can help," I heard Betty's mom say, "I know Y/N was super close with her. If she wanted to stop over and possibly collect anything that has super sentimental value then she can come over tomorrow."

"I'll come over tomorrow," I said out loud, rubbing my eyes, "I don't really wanna go to school after hearing this."

My mom nodded and told her that. Not too long after, they hung up and my mom looked at me. "I have no problem with you staying home tomorrow. Just stay safe. Dotty seems extremely distraught and I know for sure I'd feel the same way."

I nodded and the day passed. The next day, I went over to the Ripsom's house and knocked on the door. Her mom opened the door and smiled softly but had a depressed demeanor. She let me in and we made our way to Betty's room.

"Take what was the most sentimental to you," she said standing in the doorway while I walked around the room. My eyes teared up as I looked at her room. I saw two of the books that we bought before the school year. They were on her desk and I held them in my hands. Little Women and 1984. A tear rolled down my face as I held them close to my chest.

"These are the most sentimental items ever," I said as I looked over to Mrs. Ripsom. She nodded with a sad smile. We went downstairs and I went outside.

"Stay safe Y/N," she said as I biked away.

A/N: Sorry that I made a specific birthday for this. According to the movie lore, Betty goes missing around May 25th so I thought it would be good for this fanfic's lore. Same thing with the Betty's parent's names since it doesn't seem to be specified at all.
