FINNICK

Katniss finally pulls away from Peeta, calm enough that she doesn't sound like a beached whale, and can speak properly. Her eyes trail down to Peeta's chest, where a golden medallion shimmers in the sunlight. I barely noticed it when I was, y'know, saving his life.
"Is this your token?" asks Katniss as her thumb runs across the mockingjay engraved on it.
"Yes. Do you mind that I used your mockingjay? I wanted us to match." he says. Peeta really does mean the best.
"No, of course I don't mind." It sounds forced, and I guess I know why. The mockingjay is a symbol of revolution, of everything the Capitol doesn't want. It only makes sense that having one would get Snow to target you.
I sigh, my hands on my thighs. "So, you wanna make camp here?"
"I don't think that's an option." Peeta answers. "Staying here. With no water. No protection. I feel all right, really. If we could just go slowly."
Katniss and Daphne look like they want to object, but they definitely know that Peeta's right. I help him to his feet, extending an arm as I help lift him. "Well, slowly would be better than not at all."
Daphne rises. She gathers her weapons, and passes me mine as Peeta steadies himself. Katniss starts looking over her own weapons as she starts forging ahead. "I'll take the lead."
Peeta starts to object, but I cut him off. "No, let her." I frown at Katniss, remembering how she screeched out a warning mere seconds before Peeta was blasted. "You knew that force field was there, didn't you? Right at the last second? You started to give a warning."
Katniss nods. Daphne steps forward, clearly confused. "How did you know?"
Katniss hesitates, but only for a second. "I don't know. It's almost as if I could hear it. Listen." We all become still. There's the sound of insects, birds, the breeze in the foliage.
"I don't hear anything." Peeta shrugs.
"Yes." She insists. "It's like when the fence around District Twelve is on, only much, much quieter." I listen again, looking all around, but I can hear nothing besides the sounds of the jungle and my own breathing. "There! Can't you hear it? It's coming from right where Peeta got shocked."
"A little more than shocked, dear." Daphne blurts. Katniss deadpans at her for only a minute, so Daphne shrugs. "Did I lie?"
I smile a bit, but turn back to the topic at hand. "I don't hear it, either. But if you do, by all means, take the lead." Not only does Katniss have a secret about the force field, but if she fucks up, it'll be her getting blasted, not me, so win-win. Then, I remember my win-win is supposed to be getting her and Peeta out of here alive, so I silently scold myself.
Katniss frowns. "That's weird." She turns her head to the left side. "I can only hear it out of my left ear."
"The one the doctors reconstructed?" asks Peeta.
"Yeah." Katniss nods. "Maybe they did a better job than they thought. You know, sometimes I do hear funny things on that side. Things you wouldn't ordinarily think have a sound. Like insect wings. Or snow hitting the ground."
