THE BLEAK LANDSCAPE PASSED BY THE HEARSE as crackling music managed to break through the ancient radio in the dashboard, dismaying Wednesday even further. After her incident at her old prison for offspring, it had been an easy excuse for her parents to finally send her away to Nevermore. A school for outcasts. It sounded ghastly, and just boring. Wednesday would rather find fun ways of torturing humans than be surrounded by people who ‘were like her’.

The gloomy journey only grew as such as she had to watch her mother and father coo and whisper to each other, her little brother being granted the fortunate reclusion of the passenger seat. Lurch was indifferent. Wednesday’s attention finally got dragged from the dying countryside as her father’s singing voice filled the vehicle, alluring her mother in a way Wednesday could not understand. It made her want to shiver, an action she did not usually allow herself.

Once her mother began to join in, Wednesday closed her eyes, willing the arms of death to embrace her there and then. She knew they wouldn’t, she had frightened them off as a child, but some sort of hope still lingered. And yet, when she opened her eyes, she was still sitting in her seat, her parents’ duet not even being distracted when a murder of crows hit the windshield. Maybe they were attempting to escape this torture as well. Oh, Wednesday wished to be torturing someone right about now.
