I love my mom. She took me to the movies to see Playing It Cool and now we are at my favorite frozen yogurt place. I didn't like the movie though. All rom-coms are the same and it frustrates me. "I gotta say its starting to piss me off." I say while putting gummy bears into my chocolate fro-yo. "What is?" My mom, Lori, asks me. "How it's the same every time." I say "Two people. Wow. Clearly they should be together, but you're going to have to sit there watching them for two hours while they figure that out, the end. Nothing happens except the one thing we knew was gonna happen."
"That's because it's a romantic comedy, not Anna Karenina." Mom says
"Great mom now you ruined Anna Karenina" I joked with her. When I stopped filling my cup with gummy bears, the container full of it was almost empty. My mom noticed that too.
"Carter, there's cookie dough, Fruity Pebbles, ooh crushed Oreos... I can't believe I'm forcing my child to eat crushed Oreos for dinner. I am the worst mother." My mom said with a smile.
"Mom you know how I feel about gummy bears." I say back.
"I know which is why I say when we get lost I'll meet you by the nearest tub of gummy bears... Sadly that is my idea of a safety tip." My mom said and I laughed. We were heading to our table when my phone rang. It was Max. My ex.
"Who's that?" Mom asked me as we sat down at our table.
"Max."
"I thought you two broke up."
"I know. He's just too lazy to find someone else."
"So what is this? Booty call?" My mom said before biting her lip.
"Mom!" I yelled, "No he's just saying that everyone's hanging out. And please don't use the phrase 'booty call' ever again."
"Go." My mom said, "Be with your friends." As much as I wanted to go, I couldn't. This night belonged to me and my mom.
"No. This is our night." I say while shaking my head.
"Oh we saw a movie, we had dinner. I'm good." My mom says
"You sure?"
"Yeah. You can see me anytime."
"Okay." I say while getting up. Before I could start walking to the door my mom stops me. "Oh. Wait. Here take this." My mom said while handing me her leather jacket. "Mom I'm fine." I say to her. "You might get cold. Please, just let me do one mom thing." My mom said nudging the jacket towards me. "Fine." I say taking the jacket from her.
"I love you" I said, knowing where this was going.
"Love you more." My mom said
"Not possible."
"Yes possible."
"Bye." I said before leaving the frozen yogurt place.

•-•-•-•-•-•-•At the carousel•-•-•-•-•-•-•-•
There it was. The carousel of the fair that closed down one year ago. Locked behind one gate. I take my bobby pin out of my hair and heard people saying how great I am while I was picking the lock. "I want the fast one." I said after I heard a click and the door opened. Everyone ran to their favorite horse and some sat on a carriage while I went over to turn the carousel on. When I was at the switch Max said "Dude they're not moving."
"Oh ye of little faith." I said while pulling the switch that turned on the carousel. I ran to the carriage and Max sat down behind me. People were smoking, laughing, and having a great time. 5 minutes into the ride, Max leaned in and said "You know, we're still friends right?"
"Yeah." I said
"Well, let's have its benefits."
I laughed "That's basically all we ever were."
We leaned in for a kiss.
"WOOOP WOOOP!" Sirens blared when the carousel stopped moving before me and Max's lips touched.
"Ok! Rides over your coming with us!" The policeman said.
"Oh come on. We're just kids having harmless fun." I say to the cop with a smile.
Yeah... I was thrown in jail that night.
