The train ride was long. I had a long time to think about what the army was going to be like. But most of the time I thought about Kassie and the life we could/ would have had and how happy we are.
Before I could go to where they wanted to put me I had to answer a bunch of questions on what seemed like a booklet on a clipboard. When I turned in the paperwork and clipboard the receptionist said, "Please leave your luggage and everything else here and please follow me."
I did as I was told and she sent me to a room where she told me, "The doctor will be right in. Please make yourself comfortable."
Before I could ask, "What do you mean by a doctor?" She left the room. I was looking around waiting for the doctor to come. He had a bunch of pumped-up posters about being in the army. I looked at a couple of magazines before he finally came into the room.
"Hello and good afternoon, Mr. Knight. How is Mrs. Knight doing?" he told me in a cheerful voice. He was looking at some medical records in a manila folder.
"She is doing fine and a good afternoon to you too. I am sorry but what is your name?" I asked, feeling uncomfortable.
He looked at me for a moment then looked back down at the medical records and told me in the same cheerful voice as before, "Oh I am sorry my name is Dr. David Lorenzo."
He stuck out his right hand and I shook it feeling a little bit more comfortable.
There was about a minute or so of silence so he could finish looking at the medical records. He closed the folder with his right hand and said, "Sorry for the wait. I was looking at your medical records and you sound as healthy and in shape as ever to be in the army. There are just a few more things I need to check before you can go to your next station, alright."
'Next station?' I asked myself. He smiled and said, "Before we get started I will need to take a picture of you. It's just for your medical records and so every station will know what you look like and play a face to your name."
I nodded my head and just stood there. He showed me the picture. I have a very light gray almost white shirt on with a collar. My head was tilted slightly and I didn't smile (but that's normal because I never do.) I have light brown wavy hair that lightly touches my neck and covers both of my ears. Most of the time my bangs go to the right side by themselves. I have the same light brown color eyes. After he took the picture he told me to stand up on a scale and take my shoes off. I did just that. It took a while before he got the 3 balance beams just right. "Good, you are almost perfect for your weight for your age just a little under but not my much. You are 180 pounds." He wrote down how much I weighed and then asked me, "Now will you just step down and lean up tall against this wall right next to the scale please."
I did and he had to tip-toe just a little bit to see how tall I was. "Good." He got quiet for a bit. He got closer to the scale and had to tiptoe to see my height. He chuckled a bit and said, "You're taller than your average 25-year-olds. You are 6'2"." He wrote down how tall I was. He then put the pen back onto the clipboard and put it back down on the table. He came up to me and took out an Ophthalmoscope (a small black device that is about the size of a flashlight. It has a light and different tiny lenses that allow the provider to view the back of the eyeball.) "Ok now I need you to look right at the light please?"
I did as he said. He looked in my right eye for a while and did the same thing to my left eye. He nodded his head and pulled away. I closed my eyes. I brought my right hand up past my nose and put my index finger on my left eye and my thumb on my right eye and lightly rubbed them. I heard the doctor chuckle and say, "Yes sorry about that. I know it was a bit bright but they should go back to normal in a few seconds."
When he said that I opened my eyes again and squinted a bit but just like he said my eyesight was back. When he noticed I was back he said, "Sorry about that I need to see your eyes and as far as I see they are very healthy."
When he was down writing down the stuff he closed the folder and said, "When you are done putting your shoes on the receptionist will be here to lead you to your next station. Thank you and have a wonderful day."
Before I could ask him what he meant when he said next station he left the room.
Just like he said, the receptionist came back in and said kindly, "Please follow me to your next station."915 words
