The door creaked as Bonnie led Elena and me into the old, dusty space. The air was thick with lingering magic and mildew—not the most welcoming vibe.
"I've been having these dreams for days now," Bonnie said, her eyes flicking toward the shadowy corners of the room. "It's like the witches are trying to send me a message."
"Yeah, well, tell them next time to send a text," I muttered, arms crossed, eyes locking on the line of ancient coffins in front of us. "This place gives serious cryptkeeper energy."
Elena stepped forward slowly, her gaze glued to the sealed wooden boxes. "I just can't believe you guys kept this from me. All of it."
"Yeah, well, blame broody Stefan for that one," I said, not even trying to soften the sarcasm. "He thought if you knew, Klaus would threaten people to get the info out of you. Y'know, his usual 'protect Elena at all costs' routine."
Elena looked at me, then at Bonnie. "So, these are the rest of his family?"
"Yep," I nodded. "Elijah and two other Originals just taking the world's longest nap. But this one..." I gestured toward the locked coffin. "This one's the problem child. It won't open, no matter what we do. And Bonnie thinks whoever—or whatever—is inside is the key to killing Klaus."
Bonnie looked at the sealed coffin like it might whisper secrets if she stared long enough. "The dreams keep bringing me back here. I think it's the witches showing me a way to end all of this."
Right then, the door banged open, and in stormed Stefan.
"What the hell are you doing?" he snapped, eyes burning with frustration.
Bonnie stood her ground. "I needed her to know about the coffin."
"And I needed you to keep her out of it!" he hissed.
"Oh, come on," I groaned. "You seriously thought she wouldn't find out eventually? We're in Mystic Falls—secrets last like five minutes here."
Stefan turned to Elena. "You don't understand what Klaus is capable of."
"And you don't understand that keeping me in the dark doesn't protect me—it just makes me more vulnerable," Elena shot back. "What are you gonna do, Stefan? Kidnap me so I won't tell anyone?"
He didn't answer immediately, but the look in his eyes said he'd considered it.
"Don't tempt me, Elena," he said finally, his voice low.
