Ellie grabbed her overnight bag from her closet and shoved some clothes in it. She filled the bag with all the essentials- shirts, shorts, underwear, etc. she then ran into Carl's room and started helping him. Shane was in the pantry grabbing food and her mother was also packing.

"Ellie, what's happening?" Carl stuttered.

"Shane's taking us somewhere safe," she said, still plunging her hand through her brothers draws.

"Where?"

Ellie sighed. She didn't know where he was taking them. Only that they had to hurry. She finished his bag after she chucked in his favourite toys and some of his comic books. It reminded her to grab some of her own books, so she quickly darted into her room and grabbed some of her favourite titles. She grabbed another bag from under her bed and filled it with some sheets and blankets from the linen cupboard.

"Ellie!" Shane called. She ran to the sound of his voice.

"Yes?" She called back.

"Grab some sleeping bags and a tent will yah?"

She nodded shakily. Running to another cupboard and grabbed the supplies Shane had asked for out. Also adding the torch and some matches to the bag she was holding.

"Ellie, where's the first-aid kit?" called out another voice, this time her mother's.

"In the cupboard over the oven!" She called back. This time she ran straight to Carl's room. He was trying to carry his bag and pillow.

"Let me carry that," she said reaching to take the bag off him. It wasn't as heavy as he had made it out to be but she didn't say anything, just put it over her shoulder and carried it out it Shane's car. Along with her bag, and the bag with the sheets and matches. Outside she could hear alarms, sirens and lots of people screaming and yelling. There was also some other strange sounds, though she couldn't quite figure out what was making them. Until she saw it for herself.

It was a woman in a red dress making a gurgling sound at her. The women's eyes were cloudy and her jaw was torn slightly. One of her arms were dangling on a string-like vein attached to her shoulder. Then she ran at Ellie just as Ellie let out a scream.

Ellie quickly backed up to the house.

"Leave me alone," she cried at the creature. "Shane! Help!"

The monster was right on top of her and seemed like it was going to take a bite out of Ellie, it was inches away. Ellie screamed again.

A bullet went through the things head and it collapsed as Ellie's feet. Ellie spun around to see Shane staring at her with a gun in his hand. Her mother came running out.

"Oh my God!" She cried and ran to Ellie. Embracing her in tight hug as both their heartbeats raced. Shane ran back inside and came out with Carl and all the other bags and supplies.

"Get in the car!" He growled.

Ellie grabbed Carl's hand and they both slid into the back seat. Ellie heard Shane slam the boot shut.

No one talked until Shane was in the car and it had become mobile.

"Shane, what's going on?" Ellie's mother asked.

"It's not safe here anymore, we have to get to Atlanta."

"Why did that woman attack me?" Ellie asked.

"It wasn't a woman," was all he said.

"It was one of those things," said Carl, "from the news? Right? The ones that are eating people?"

They all looked at the man driving. He nodded.

"Oh God!" Said Ellie's mother putting her hand over her mouth.

"Dad!" Ellie cried, "we need to go back for him."

Shane shook his head, "I've already been there, it was overrun. Rick's..."

He stopped. He couldn't say the next word. He didn't have to.

"No," Ellie cried, "no, no, no. He's fine. The army would've been protecting him, right mom?"

She was already crying. So was Carl. He clung onto Ellie's shirt, dampening it with his tears. Ellie didn't cry. She was in too much shock to say anything. No one spoke for the rest of the trip. Ellie fell asleep with Carl already asleep on her lap she leaned against the window and kissed the world she knew goodbye.
