Another Day
Last moments seemed to pass like clouds in the sky. The bustling customers had come and gone. The kitchen closed two hours before closing, which gave a relief to Courtney's tired feet.
Courtney stocked all the left over food into the warmer, while Mike counted the money in the cash register and talked on the phone. Courtney finish putting in the food and went to make mop water for the floor. The bell above the door clinged. Courtney automatically looked up. Some old crack head, probably wanting some beer.
Courtney spoke to him and he spoke back. Courtney looked rough and she knew it. Pieces of her hair had came undone from her pony tail and framed her face.
After she finished moping and putting up the caution signs, Courtney grunted as she picked up the heavy bucket to take it outside and empty the water. A nice black infinity pulled in to one of the gas pump. Whoever it was Courtney didn't pay any attention, until she heard her name being called. It was a male voice and She was alone. Her first instinct told her to ignore it and get back inside, but her reflexes made her look.
Courtney narrowed her eyes, "Hello?"
She wasn't sure who it could be, but she was sure who it sound like. The person begun to walk closer to her, and she could see him more clearly. Courtney was shocked to say the least. The boy that she remembered picking on her when she was little, had grown since their time in high school.
Damn.
His body was replace with that of Captain America's. His body had finally caught up to his head and he seemed to be doing well for himself. He wore a grey plain tee with a gold chain necklace and dark blue jeans.
"Hey. Long time no see." He smiled.
Damn.
Courtney never played attention, but he had dimples. Courtney loved a man with dimples, "Hey Chad. My momma told me you was back down here. I didn't expect to see you so soon."
My hair looking a mess.
Meet Chad Merkle. Use to be a scrawny little coward. That was before he joined the Marines. Something about a boy going off and coming back a man seemed right to Courtney. Hell, she was getting wet just staring at him. Chad grabbed the heavy bucket from her hands.
"What are you doing?"
"Being a gentleman or did you forget what one looks like."
That made Courtney blush. Then, reality settled in. Chad wouldn't be interested in her. She saw herself as a little sister to him. Chad walked away with the bucket and emptied it beside the building. Chad wasn't as fine as Mr. Wilson but the sight of a real man is better than none at all. Courtney waited for Chad to come back over before saying thank you and going back inside.
Chad held the door for her as she walked in, "Somethings never change."
"Somethings do."
Chad smiled back at her.
Yeah Courtney. Real smart comeback.
"Was you coming to get something or are you just here to harass me?"
Chad looked around the store, putting his hands in his pockets, "Both."
I take that back. Things didn't change.
