Chapter 9

Caroline strolled out of Beacon Hills High the next afternoon to an unwelcomed sight—Erica climbing into the alpha’s Camaro.

Her eyes heated in a glare that he must have felt because he looked up and flashed her a blinding grin, his perfect white teeth in competition with the sunshine. To add insult to injury, he followed the grin with a slick wink. One that would have found her twirling a strand of hair around her finger, with a flirty grin of her own in response just a few years ago.

She growled under her breath while stubbornly ignoring the flutter in her stomach, before storming off in the direction of the outpost building. It was time to get changed for day two of tryouts. She'd deal with him later.

Erica slammed the Camaro's door behind her after climbing in, paying no attention to the alpha's long suffering sigh and instead watched Derek watch Miss Forbes march towards the lacrosse field.

“Where is she storming off to?” Derek asked his new pack member pensively, green eyes still following the blonde’s progress. He decided to let the matter of her constantly slamming his door lie. For now.

He’d come to pick Erica up for training. Baby wolves had a hair trigger temper and that came with a lot of opportunities for people to get hurt and unwanted questions from the authorities. It had been hard for him at that age and he’d been training to transform since birth.

He needed his pack to know how to hold their own. To be ready. His psychotic, murderous uncle, Peter Hale, might be dead but there was something else lurking in Beacon Hills' shadows. Isaac Lahey and Vernon Boyd were coming along better than he’d expected but they still had a long way to go. With the addition of Erica, he had his hands full, especially with a vampire in town sticking her nose where it didn’t belong.

“Tryouts.”

Erica rolled her eyes at Derek’s blank look.

“She’s the new track and field coach. Well, technically, she’s assisting Finstock but she basically runs things. Today’s the second day of tryouts.”

Derek watched the blonde vampire’s swinging ponytail disappear around the school’s main building with a final swish. His blood heated. Almost to the degree of the glare he'd received from her when she came out to Erica climbing into his car. He grinned, loving that even her ponytail carried her attitude.

“You should go try out.” The words were out of his mouth before he recognized them as a thought.

“What?” Erica scoffed. “I don’t have an athletic bone in my body.”

“You didn’t have an athletic bone in your body,” He reminded her.  “I need you to keep an eye on her for me. She seems to have a soft spot for you and we might need that.”

Erica hesitated.

“Why do you need me to keep an eye on her? Why would you need her 'soft spot' for me? She’s a really nice person, Derek, don’t drag her into–”

“I’m not dragging her into anything. I just like to be prepared. Don’t worry, I’m not out to hurt your guardian angel.” The alpha rolled his eyes, more than a little offended.

“Go, Erica.” Derek’s tone left no room for argument from his beta.

Erica huffed and grabbed her bag before shoving the Camaro’s door open. “You’re lucky I have a pair of gym clothes in my locker.”

She slammed the door behind her, gratified at her alpha's wince and stormed off in the direction Miss Forbes had a few minutes earlier.

Derek sighed and rubbed his forehead trying to fight off the tension already growing from his temples down to the back of his head.
