I catch the fleeting gasp of breath as it escaped my lips. My stomach contorted under the pressure of the blow. The world twisted and turned at its corners, folding in on itself for only a second. I see the ceiling pass me by as my head hits the solid ground.
I cough, hacking up blood, taking in my surroundings blurred around me.
I was blind, or at least that's how it felt. The illumination of the room was very low, almost black. Soft chatter mixed itself in with nervous shifting to form faint noises in the background. I struggled up to a sitting position. My cargo pants shifting in reaction to the change at the pockets, suggested that there was something in them. Fumbling around in the cramped space I was positioned in, I found my way to the object.
It was my phone, which I slipped out, dropping in onto the floor with a loud metallic clank. Whispering a curse, I reach over for it. Slipping off whatever I was resting on, I caught the end of the word I was halfway through saying. Hitting the stiff, steel ground, I was met with the stench of rot and decay. It hit my nose like a punch, reminding me of bile or cow manure. Coughing, I felt as though my gut was crawling its way out of my mouth. I fumble around what felt like shattered glass and odd liquids until I finally found the stiff edges of my phone.
I turned it on, illuminating the area with a soft blue glow. A crack ran its way down the top right of the screen, splitting the time. I could still read it though, it was 00:00.
That's odd, I don't recall ever switching to military time. Maybe my phone accidentally reset or something. I open it and use the dim light to survey my surroundings. A wall of dark navy blue was directly in front of me, so close the light barely made it registrable. I attempt to look up, shuffling up to where I was resting moments before. The light made its way around the darkness, revealing a window frame, and some steel bars.
The wall of blue in front of me was the back of a seat. I was sitting in a school bus. I decide to turn on the flashlight app, covering a greater area with a soft white glow. The light didn't reach all the way to the front of the bus, however I could still make out dark shapes moving around up there. A change on the screen of my phone brought attention to itself. My battery was in red. The white 20% next to the red bar worried me. I had no clue where I was, and flashlight power really burns battery away.
I turn off my phone and make an attempt to move towards the front of the bus, shuffling out of my seat into the alley. I hear some soft coughs, followed up by wet gurgles. Using only my hand to guide me, I make my way slowly towards the steering wheel.
A hand comes out of nowhere and grabs my shoulder. Sending a chill across my body, I freeze in place.
"H-elp...m...e." I hear a gurgling voice come from whom I assumed owned the hand on my shoulder. I slip my phone out of my pocket and shine a light on the person. It was a girl, with half of her face missing. Bits of red flesh and blood mingled with her skull, the other half of her face was a sickening purple color. The sweet odor of rot and decay waft into my nose, as I take a look at what appeared to be half a corpse.
I throw her hand off of me. Taking multiple steps backwards, tripping over my own feet. The darkness swirled around me as I felt the ground claim me. Bumping into the seats as I went. I turn around into a crawling position and throw up. My heart was hammering in my chest as I retreated towards the backside of the bus.
Why was she like that? How was she still alive? I wonder, fumbling through the darkness back to what I assumed my seat was. I went further though, going all the way back to the very back of the bus. Reaching for the exit escape door. I tried the handle desperately, but only flakes of rust chip off, the handle didn't move. In desperation I slammed my body against the door. Trying hard to make it budge. But nothing was working. I ran instead over towards the windows, pleading for them to show me mercy.
