------------------------Kagami's POV--------------------------
After the meeting has concluded and I watch the mafia team begin their retreat, I continue to play fetch with Creed a little longer. Creed hasn't had this much fun in a while, plus it's kind of relaxing for me. So we just keep playing our little game. I throw the stick, he fetches it, then I chase him around because he refuses to give it back, then we do it all over again. It sounds monotonous, but I'm actually having fun myself. A gentle rustling sound surrounds me as a breeze brushes through the trees. The sky glows with the pale ombre of a sunset. Creed gallops happily back and forth retrieving his stick, his tongue lolling from his mouth and his tail wagging excitedly behind him. A deep breath escapes my lungs as I relax. I wish it could always be like this.
Then I hear footsteps coming up behind me. I turn around with a smile, expecting it to be Dazai. It was not Dazai. Instead, I find a tall slim man with dark hair smiling down at me. His face looks slightly familiar, but I can't quite place it...
"What a gorgeous specimen you've got there," the man says, gesturing towards Creed who's a little ways away chasing after a squirrel.
"He is beautiful isn't he," I answer with a proud smile. "We were just taking a walk in the area and decided to take a little break," I add, trying to cover up the real reason I was here.
"A beautiful dog for a beautiful owner. Very fitting," He says with a suave smile as he studies my face. I feel my cheeks growing hot, and I'm thankful for the orange glow of the sunset to hide my blushing. Seeing my embarrassment, a small chuckle sounds in the back of his throat. Then he adds, "Oh how rude of me! I never even asked for your name!"
Completely flustered, any notion of cautiousness completely escapes me. Looking down shyly at my feet, I answer, "My name's Sato. Sato Kagami."
"Well, Sato Kagami, it's very nice to make your acquaintance," the man says, extending his hand to shake mine.
I extend my hand to grasp his, but just as our fingertips are about to make contact, his hand gets swiftly slapped out of my reach with a loud resounding crack in this quiet atmosphere. My gaze snaps upward to find the source of this aggression. Standing beside me is Dazai, his eyes locked on the stranger before me in an icy cold expression. For some unknown reason, the man just laughs at Dazai. "What do you think you're doing?" Dazai asks in a low, serious voice.
"Who me?" the man begins with a cheeky grin, "nothing particular. I was just making small talk with this beautiful little lady." There's this undeniable tension between the two men. It's practically smothering me, making my chest tight. It's like they're locked in some mental dual, and I don't even know why.
Without an explanation, Dazai firmly takes my hand saying, "Come on Kagami, let's go." Leaving no room for questions or opposition, he swiftly pulls me far away from the strange man. That's when I realize Creed is right at Dazai's heels. He's been there the whole time. Creed must have seen me talking to the man earlier and gone to get Dazai. But for that to happen, Creed would have had to recognize the man... Now I'm even more confused.
"Who was that, Dazai?" I ask him.
Dazai doesn't even look back at me when he answers, "That was Mori, the boss of the Port Mafia."
My eyes practically pop out of my head. "No way..." I exclaim under my breath. "But then, why did Creed go to get you? Why didn't he stay beside me like he usually does?" I ask, glancing down questioningly at my favorite furry friend.
"Because he knows he doesn't stand a chance against Mori," Dazai Answers.
I stop in my tracks, pulling my hand out of Dazai's tight grasp. "What do you mean 'he knows'?" I ask with my eyes narrowed in Dazai's direction.
His face turns white and he averts his eyes from me as he says, "I don't know. I was just saying. Now let's keep moving come on." He tries to grab my hand again, but I pull it away.
"No. What are you not telling me, Dazai" I say accusingly. I can feel the anger rising in my chest.
I can tell he's becoming exasperated as well as he says, "We don't have time for this right now."
"I'm not moving until you tell me the truth," I say, looking him straight in the eye. We stand there in tense silence for a moment while he weighs his options here.
"Ok. Ok. Fine," Dazai gives in begrudgingly and starts telling me a story. Every word that comes out of his mouth only manages to make me angrier and angrier. He tells me a story from a long time ago- a story from when he was still a member of the Port Mafia. Dazai and a group of mafia members, including Mori, were on an intense mission. In the process, they had to track someone down and kill him as he slept. Their target, however, had a dog. My dog. The dog attacked his owner's assailants viciously, even managing to kill one of them, but he couldn't save his master. When Dazai and his team had completed their mission, they left the dog to die. Turns out animal control would later turn the dog in under the suspicion that he was the one who killed his owner.
So that's why Creed was in the shelter to be put down when I found him... I realized.
By the time Dazai was finished with his confession, I was practically shaking with anger. "How could you keep something like that from me?!" I yelled at him.
"Come on Kags, it's not like I lied to you or anything," He said, trying to soften the situation with the nickname only he calls me.
"I thought we told each other everything," I replied in a low voice, tears beginning to seep into the corners of my eyes. I feel so betrayed. I poured my heart out to this man, told him everything. I let him into my home and showed him the most broken parts of my mind. Before Dazai can even formulate a response I take Creed and leave. As I walk away I vaguely hear Dazai say something else, but I don't even turn around.
To make things worse, I get called in to work later that night...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Time Skip~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It's a little after 8 pm when I start closing up shop. Despite the seemingly joyful customer service smile I have plastered on my face, I'm still fuming from Dazai and I's encounter earlier. It's not so much anger as it is sadness. It still makes me want to cry when I think about it, so I push it out of my mind. I finish cleaning in about half an hour, then I go into the kitchen to retrieve Creed from his favorite nap spot. But as I turn on the lights in the kitchen, a scream escapes my lips. There's a man I've never seen before in the kitchen, and in his arms lies the limp body of my beloved Creed. I can't tell if he's dead or not, but before I can even make a move, a pair of strong arms aggressively wraps around me from behind. There was another intruder waiting in the shadows to attack me this whole time. I try my best to escape, screaming and kicking and thrashing. My swinging legs knock a stack of dishes down and they come crashing to the floor. But that's all I manage to do before my mysterious attacker smothers my nose and mouth with a strange-smelling cloth and everything goes black.
